Instead of seeing the whole person, it’s easy to define one another by a single actionlike who we voted for. When talking with relatives, it can be helpful to remember that the person you disagree so vehemently with is the same uncle who taught you to cast a fishing line or the same cousin who kept your middle school confidences. You don’t have to see eye-to-eye or even condone your relatives’ views to recognize each other’s humanity. Politics are one manifestation of our values, but values are also expressed in the way we talk to one another. When times are tense and stakes are high, it’s especially important to think about how we interact with others.
