For the new Six Red Ampersands letterpress print, Richard Kegler uses various blocks from the P22 Pollack Printing Collection: six ampersands of ascending sizes, a large halftone block of a woman’s head (from some unknown advertising campaign) with her eye peering through an ampersand, and mysterious technical drawings carved into end-grain hardwood all printed on a Vandercook proof press. This minimal Pop art/Dadaist collage evokes the mid-century modernist graphic design of... Lester Beall. Like many of the prints from this collection, the reflections and ink densities are hard to capture in photographs. The silver metallic stock adds an extra level of depth on the grouping of otherwise flat elements. For this 12.5" 19" print, Richard used black, red, and gold inks on silver Zanders Chromolux 11.2pt cover stock. Precursors to P22 Torrone are found among the type experiments of Art Deco artists in 1930’s Europe. Fonts of this type with chunky, geometry-driven lower case letters combined with somewhat flamboyant, brush-influenced upper case can be found in the logotypes for Mignon Chocolate Factory in Germany and Baci bon-bons still in use today by Italy’s Perugina Candies. Richard Kegler was inspired in part by the documentation of saw patterns on the backs of wood type done by David Shields for his research on American Wood Type manufacturing of the 19th Century, the undersides of all type high blocks are generally as printable as the faces. Combined with the discovery of misused broken wood type blocks, the imagery of manufacturing by products and neglect become something more formal and beautiful when locked up in a form. Add in the inspirat...ion of flying cross-country on a clear day and staring out at the flat landscape, and this is how this series came to be. P22 Dollars ephemera pack. Over the years, starting around 2000, P22 would print some (not)money on the edges of other print runs. These bills had various denominations, ranging from $5 to 95 cents. They functioned as gift certificates and coupons for mail order use. Of course designed with P22 fonts and dingbats, with occasional custom illustrations to elaborateeach a mini type specimen. Most were crash numbered, some hand numbered, and one was even embossed, to ensure auth...enticity.
