The IRS has just issued the following guideline regarding Stimulus payments made to deceased persons: Question: Does someone who died qualify for the payment? A10. No. A Payment made to someone who died before receipt of the Payment should be returned to the IRS by following the instructions about repayments. Return the entire Payment unless the Payment was made to joint filers and one spouse had not died before receipt of the Payment, in which case, you only need to return t...he portion of the Payment made on account of the decedent. Latest on the Stimulus Checks Treasury to reclaim checks sent to deceased The Treasury Department and the IRS rushed to send out the economic impact payments and in doing so, admits that some deceased individuals received the payments. According to multiple sources, the IRS plans to issue guidance in the coming days. We expect the guidance to include details on how to return the errored checks.... So for now, if you received a check addressed to a deceased individual just hold onto the check and wait for additional direction to be issued by the IRS.
