Mrs. Q invites you to her home in 1765 NYC. She has just witnessed the Stamp Act riots and is anxious to tell you about it.

I can't imagine what Alexander Hamilton thought the first time he entered the great hall of the Van Rensselaer Manor house in Albany, NY. His mother-in-law was Katherine (Kitty) Van Rensselaer Schuyler and in 1780 he married into two of the oldest, most influential families of New York. This is the Great Hall, preserved and installed in the Metropolitan Museum of art here in NYC. The wallpaper style is known as "grisaille", a style of monochromatic painting in shades of gray used especially for the representation of relief sculpture. (American Heritage Dictionary) The hand-painted wallpaper depicts Italian ruins based on popular paintings of the time. It was painted in London and shipped to NY for installation.

September 22, 1765 - The dreaded Stamped Paper arrives in NYC! The colonies have been protesting against the Stamp Act since Spring, using the slogan "No Taxation Without Representation!" For the past two weeks, the Stamp Act Congress has been meeting in NYC, a meeting of representatives of the colonies. Sons of Liberty have been protesting around the city and placing ads in the papers warning against using the dreaded paper. The stamps arrive on the ship "Edward". The NY Po...st Boy reports "They were ship'd so privately, that not a passenger in the ship knew of their being on board, till a Man of War here came on board to take care of their security." Captain and Engineer John Montresor wrote in his journal that 12,000 people gathered the next morning at the dock "expecting the stamps to be landed, but were disappointed". The paper had been moved during the night into Fort George. "Many placards appeared threatening the lives, houses and properties of any one who shall either issue or receive a stamp." The next day, the stamp agent, James McEvers, resigns his position to the cheers of the Sons of Liberty. Interesting?
