Tonight is Troy Night Out and I'm still thinking about the Gilded Age and the influence of Venetian glass makers on the fancy ware glass in the United States from 1870-1900. This bowl is one of my favorites in the gallery. It is made of murrini (slices of handmade glass cane that show colors or patterns when cut into thin cross-sections). Brett Hay made all of the canes, sliced them and assembled them into the bowl. Most people think of murrini in paperweights, Brett thinks of them making bowls. We love the inventiveness of the work, its sense of history and, of course, its beauty.

Troy Night Out will be this Friday and we're open until 9 - We've been wandering downtown Troy the last few days and are amazed at the transformation it is undergoing for the filming of "The Gilded Age. Troy is being morphed into New York City in the late 19th century, and there’s even a Bloomingdales! These changes have me thinking of decorative art (really, anything that is not fine art) and from the 1860s-1890s, glassware in the United States and England was strongly ...influenced by the furnace-manipulated glass of Venice, specifically the island of Murano. The Venetian influence is seen in much of the fancy ware produced in the United States between 1870s and 1890s, the very period of the Gilded Age. Many of the glass artists in our gallery trained with Venetian masters and it shows in the glassware - goblets, rocks glasses and pitchers as well as bowls made of murrini (slices of handmade glass cane that show colors or patterns when cut into thin cross-sections).
