The laser - the quantum mechanical engine of the 21st century by Dr Joyce Kilmer... Director of Marketing Photonics Industries International, Inc Photonics will be as big a part of the 21st century as electronics was for the 20th century. Just as electronics covers the manipulation of electricity (i.e. the electron) to perform very profound things such as: TV, computers, etc., photonics generally cover the manipulation of light (i.e. the photon) to achieve equally profound things such as fiber optic telecommunication, laser material processing and laser based remote sensing. Laser processing of materials is seen as a greener more environmentally friendly manufacturing technique than, for example, wet chemical etching and is a key part of solar cell and flat panel display manufacturing. Laser remote sensing enables standoff detection of hazardous materials from safe distances, as well as, wind LIDAR systems that can be used to dynamically optimize a wind turbine for maximum efficiency. Fiber optics has already enabled the manifestation of the Information Age via its preeminence in the physical layer of telecom networks and lays the foundation for the smart grid of the future. Key to this is the advent of the laser -- the quantum mechanical analog of the first classical mechanical machine the steam engine! The parallels are fascinating. From James Watt’s invention of the first practical steam engine in the 1700’s, we saw the Industrial Age come about primarily because of the steam engine. First for the Textile Industry (i.e., the power loom) and then finding its killer app -- the steam locomotive enabling the Railroad Industry of the 1800s. The stream engine was the driver of the Industrial Age. Analogously, the first quantum mechanical machine, the laser, was invented just a little over 50 years ago in the 20th century. It found its killer app as the engine for the fiber optic telecommunication industry ushering in the Information Age. The laser is the steam engine of the Information Age. And that improvement of the laser (akin to the internal combustion engine improvement of the steam engine) whatever that will be -- will propel mankind into the 22nd century! #photonix
