"'They Hanged My Willy,' which, by contrast to Burning Man’s solitary figure, powerfully conveys the effect of lynching on families, as Willy’s wife and children mourn him as he hangs from a tree. Moreover, this work highlights the mixing of races resulting from the rape of slaves, as Willy and two of his children are distinctly light-skinned. But that fact couldn’t save him from the noose." - Bryan Boucher on Mary Frances Whitfield's art

"Typical of her stripped-down approach is Burning Man, which employs simple orange and red slashes that play over the body of a figure hanging from a tree, feet just barely above the ground. The absence of other figures compounds the violence with an overpowering sense of loneliness." -Bryan Boucher on Mary Frances Whitfield's art
