It’s been a minute since I’ve posted, so I figured I’d share. First, my apologies to those of you who inquired about the release of the Gluten-free based Spice Bun recipe and trial e-cookbook. I originally intended to release the recipes a week ago, but it turns out that God had other plans. Let me explain: That Spice Bun much like the art pictured here had been inspired by my mother, a breast cancer survivor who suffered w/ a severe gluten allergy among other ailments. It... had been made specially for her; in fact, I was supposed to make her another one for today. But, as God planned it, she transitioned on 3/16/2021. When she asked me to create the recipe, she had mentioned that #Easter was coming unusually early this year...two weeks earlier than usual. Little did I know, she was speaking of her own rebirth. My mother was a devoted Christian, absolutely brilliant, and she LOVED being a mom. She also suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, a horrible trauma-induced degenerative mental disease, for the last 20 years of her life. This disease stopped her from doing everything she loved. I feel calm knowing that she is finally happy and boundless...and still by my side guiding and supporting me in every step of my purpose. What is that, [not so red] velvet? Cremeux Tart Top: Cream Cheese Frosting colored w/ Beet Root Powder, Cocoa Curls, Begonias, Orchids, Dianthus, Organic Green Grapes Filling: Cocoa Cremeux made with Saffron, Cardamom, and Amish Duck Eggs. Pomegranate plant-based die added for color and flavor. Bottom: Dutch Black Cocoa Crumble Crust ... As proud as I am to be , I am also very and VERY Black on both sides. So, I decided to create an elevated rendition of one of the most Black American dessert there is, Red Velvet Cake. Verdict = The texture and taste are , but I’ll add more cream cheese frosting next time! #redvelvet #tart

When I was 9 years old, I found out my mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Every old school Caribbean American household - maybe even every Black American household - has that one room with furniture nobody is allowed to use. Ours consisted of a mahogany and glass China Armoire; a tan velvet couch, love seat, and chair (yes, they were all velvet ) with mahogany feet; and a well shiny mahogany coffee table all sitting in a sea of off-white carpet...all untouchable......until that day. I remember how carefully my parents shared the news with my older brother and I. I remember how hard it was for my mom in particular to say the words...but I also remember the fight in her, I had never seen her display more confidence than when she tearfully said, I will not leave my children! And when I tell you my momma was a looker. Tuh! She was so pretty that I couldn’t go to the supermarket, the school, the park, nowhere without men and women stopping us. But that flattery is not from whence her confidence came. Her confidence came from being our mother. I looked around at everything in that room and wondered what good any of it was without her. Damn sure didn’t care that I FINALLY GOT TO SIT ON THAT COUCH. Once her treatment started, I would rush home from school every. single. day. like clockwork to take care of her. I was there to make sure she kept her word. My mom still made sure to attend parent-teacher conferences, and she was so surprised to hear that one of my teachers - Mrs. Black - and I had a daily check-in where I would vent about the experience. Sometimes I cried. Sometimes we just sat in silence, she would hug me for a long time. It’s so important that women share their herstories. Stories of love, stories of health, stories of shame, stories of triumph. This month I pay tribute to my triumphant mother - the strongest woman I know - and everyone who has suffered as a consequence of this deadly disease. Never hesitate to feel up yuhself; it’s important for so many reasons and seasons.
