Last month I put a stat up about my utility company trying to charge me an extra $600+ for one month of service and threatened to shut off my gas and electric if I didn't pay in 4 days. Once I received the shut off notice I called immediately and told them they'd made a huge mistake. Here's how the events took place: Stage 1: I called the company and explained the letter I received and that it must be a mistake. Not only do I pay my bills on time, I actually pay them early mo...st months. The rep told me it wasn't a mistake, they did have the right to charge me based on estimated usage (since they could not read the meter due to covid) and that was that. Speaking to a manager would get me no where. Stage 2: I contacted someone in my network who I knew was a higher-up at the company. As a favor she took the time to look into the problem BUT here's the key: I was as specific with her about the situation as I possibly could be. Because of this, she was able to understand the problem and realized this was a mistake and the utility company's fault. Stage 3: I had to go to the meter, take pics and email them to the company along with an explanation. I said I wanted an investigation. Stage 4: I called the company and explained the situation again, this time speaking with another rep. I told her I wanted them to have it recorded in their system that this was a mistake, what I believed was a mistake by the meter reader. He must've input the wrong number when writing down the reading. One number off can be the difference between $10 and $100! Stage 5: The company emailed me back stating it was a mistake and they will take care of this immediately. Stage 6: I paid them $87 Morals of the story: good networks can get you places and get you faster results if you think a large company has made a mistake, KEEP FIGHTING until the problem is corrected. Let's face it, paying taxes is a pain in the a** but Uncle Sam needs his cut! Rule of thumb is to save 30-35% of your earnings for taxes from each sale you make OR for how much you anticipate to make each month. Having a separate account for it just makes things 10xs easier when it's time to pay quarterly taxes. When used responsibly, credit cards can help you spread the cost of big-ticket purchases and manage monthly expenditures more easily. Another good reason to take care of your credit card? They help protect your cash and bank accounts from loss or theft. There is credit card purchases protection under the Truth in Lending Act; in the case of fraudulent charges, the most you can be held liable for is $50. Too many credit inquiries can damage your credit score and remain on your credit report for up to two years! When someone asks if they can check or run your credit, always be sure to ask if it is a hard inquiry or a soft inquiry. A soft inquiry, according to Experian, is when you or someone you authorize checks your credit report. These can happen with potential employers, credit card companies, and mortgage lenders. These do not impact your credit score.... A hard inquiry, according to Experian, occurs when you apply for a new line of credit, such as a credit card or a loan. These show up on your credit report and can affect your credit score. Entrepreneurs rejoice! Section 195 of the IRS code states that you can deduct the cost of launching your business as "startup expenditure." You can write off up to $5,000 of those startup expenses in the first year of the business's operation; deduct in equal portion the remainder of the startup costs over the following 15 years. What counts as a startup cost? Fees paid for legal or accounting services; licenses and permits; market research; advertising; rent for office space or equipment; training and employee costs; and consider the cost of lining up suppliers, distributors, or financing.
