We seem to be living in the final act of a tragedylike one of those cruel setups that were the stock-in-trade of the ancient Greek Godswhere humanity's hubris..., pride, and stupidity bring about catastrophe. Our situation also bears striking resemblance to ancient Mesoamerican myths about the end of a cycle. In those legends, humanity seals its fate through its arrogant faith in its tool-making capacity, seeking to conquer nature. Before the end of one World and the beginning of the next, our tools turn against us, along with nature herself. Something like this, indeed, seems to be happening now. Fifteen years ago, I wrote a book exploring the prophecies of indigenous and traditional cultures around the world. I looked at prophecies from Mesoamerica and Native America, as well as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and the Vedic tradition of ancient India. In their auguries, all of these cultures seemed to point toward our time. They anticipated a period of epochal change, destruction, and eventual rebirth or re-creation. In what follows, I will revisit this material in the light of current eventsthe rapidly worsening ecological and geopolitical situationand then consider some metaphysical perspectives.
