A True Hollywood Story TAMING THE LIONTUESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2020 TAMING THE LION is based on the true story of the contentious relationship between movie mogul Louis B. Mayer and William Haines, the first openly gay actor in the studio system in 1933. The number one box office star, Haines took a chance by being seen in public with his lover, Jimmy Sheilds---much to the dismay of Mayer who feared he would lose money and possibly his studio if the truth got out to the public. He offered Haines an ultimatum---get rid of your lover, marry a woman---or leave MGM.
