PORT CITY MODELS & TALENT has had the most amazing experience shooting in the studio with LL Bean since January (during a pandemic!!!) www.portcitymodels.com LL Bean Fashion Photographer Jaime Kahn: My amazing wife, on the project we shot for the L.L.Bean Catalog last January. https://www.instagram.com/tv/CPYM7BPBiEW/

Port City Models and Talent 21.06.2021

ME @ age 21 #CollegeDays #CampusLife #VarsityLetterJacket... lying against that tree... wondering... pondering... contemplating... ??? "Who am I? Who am I meant... to be... what is my 'calling', who/what will I become? I actually knew it would involve New York City and some part of the Fashion, Modeling and Music worlds-after I got a guitar at age 12 and took lessons... I had also started sketching and sewing all my clothing at age 10, because I loved the creativity of fashion and having lots of unconventional options in which to express my emerging personality... and then I met a Model Agent from Paris, signed with her Agency and started Modeling... booking print work and doing TV commercials... however... I still kept questioning... self-doubting... listening too much to everyone else's plan for me and of my perceived obligations... being the ‘over-responsible’ oldest of 4 siblings with an ill Dad and ill sister (both Bi-Polar before effective meds were available which was terrifying) both to whom I was very close. My sister passed away at 34 after being struck by a vehicle while out walking. My priority was always to be there for my family... as most of us want to... until the day when we somehow 'finally' truly give ourselves permission to start believing that we deserve to move forward with our own dreams (if ever we are able to reach that point)... and take a different path, on our own terms... and take action to make that happen... whatever we may choose to put our energy and passion into... but it can take years to liberate ourselves... particularly with illness in a family... and it’s always a challenge to go against the female societal/cultural scripts & norms we internalize at the time in which we grew up and generational family patterns, expectations, responsibilities, early life traumas and perceived agendas ingrained within our subconscious that direct our daily thoughts and behavior. Soo... underneath that tree on that gorgeous Spring day on campus.. I hoped and dreamed and wondered... with anxious anticipation... "What would the future bring? What would lie ahead? What would I accomplish? How brave would I be? Those questions were only the beginning of my extremely introspective... highly analytical... continually seeking... always curious and learning... intensely sensitive... ever-evolving... never satisfied... type A... perfectionistic... driven... wanting it all... high achievement-oriented... entrepreneurial mind, personality and complicated self... I'm still learning, evolving and always seeking to become a better version of myself... (as cliche as that sounds... it's true!!!) 22 years after this photo was taken, after a long marriage, raising 2 sons and making the excruciatingly difficult decision to get divorced and take the world on... on my own... as a single Mom with the 24/7 care and raising of my 2 sons, who were ages 11 & 14... always my priority... (while working 3 jobs to keep them in the beautiful 4-bedroom colonial home we had painstakingly designed and built the year our oldest started kindergarten-much of it built, pounded & painted with our own hands and blood, sweat & tears every moment we were not at work or at our sons’ sports’ games... in a new North Deering neighborhood in Portland)... and having started my career as a Model in my teens... with the passion for the business still burning within me... I decided to attempt to start my own Modeling Agency... (with 4 other Talent Agencies already in existence in Southern Maine)... and 4 years later I was shocked and thrilled to learn that I had been selected for the ANNUAL LIST of 'PORTLAND'S MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN' featured in a newspaper interview and celebratory event that was held at David's Restaurant in downtown Portland... recognized for founding Port City Models & Talent Inc... a 'Fashion Model' oriented Modeling Agency... who developed and booked Maine & New England based models for the runways of NY Fashion Week and booked them in major magazines ...and for putting our 'hip little city' on the map and fashion landscape in the global Model/Talent Industries. It was a ‘pinch me’ moment... a feeling that all my hard work in following my (2nd act-post divorce) passion had made an impact!!! (my original passion of moving to NYC full-time right after college to Model and work in Fashion Design had been put on delay due to family illness priorities and then the raising of my amazing sons) but in the starting of my Modeling Agency years later, I had in a sense... once again brought the creative passions that made me feel alive... back to life!!! I started my Agency all on my own... with no financial backing or loans, no advertising and no social media. It was an organic experiment of sorts. Could I do it? Was it possible? I did all my own branding, through writing Fashion Columns and covering ‘hip’ trendy ‘scene at’ Restaurant Openings and Fashion Shows & Events for numerous magazines... and did my own marketing through emailing newsletters highlighting my Agency’s events and Models’ bookings and through in-person meetings and extensive in-person networking... pounding the pavement... in the Fashion & Modeling worlds in both Portland and within the global Fashion crowd in NYC who would return to gather at the Designers’ Runway Shows at Bryant Park & Lincoln Center each February and September for New York Fashion Week!!! It was an exhilarating time offering the opportunity to meet so many fabulous, intriguing, talented and fashionable people each season!!! I had the time of my life!!! I was in my element!!! As an entrepreneur (and Mom of 2 sons) and (2001) founder of Port City Models & Talent... and as someone who is continually scouting for new faces and talent... seeking the traditional, as well as the non-traditional beauty, wisdom (inner spirit & positive light) and diversity in each person I meet (as well as seeking these qualities within all the serendipitous situations I seem to randomly encounter in this life) I’ve learned I value 'imperfection' and uniqueness in looks, personalities and talent... as well as character, a positive, appreciative attitude, loyalty, integrity, reliability and beauty on the inside... far more than beauty on the outside or faces that all look the same or are surgically altered to look the same. It's the authentic essence of one's spirit, energy and mindset... what one focuses on... that makes a person beautiful, memorable and inspiring. I have great empathy and compassion for all people (who after overcoming numerous tough life challenges and much soul-searching) are able to find the strength of their own spirit and voices to create/pioneer their own individual paths and seek their unique dreams and passions with confidence, peace and eventually 'joie de vivre' (that resilience that most of us will be called upon to garner and develop... again and again throughout the high and low points of our lives) including pandemics!!! At this point in my life I have lost the anchor of both of my cherished, loving parents and I’m someone who works hard to overcome my own (many) lifelong challenging experiences. My father and sister’s Bi-Polar illness (requiring shock treatments and being in and out of hospitals annually to get regulated when they were manic or suicidal) and my Mother’s and my helplessness (in attempting daily to fix everything) in this lifelong challenge we faced daily... left me with a guardedness, various fears, (hyper)-vigilance-a high-sensitivity and the (gift & pain) of an ability to intuitively read the subtleties of the changing moods, emotions, energy and intentions of others and a perfectionism (self-criticism). I’m a type A, who is very hard on myself. (which is usually a quality required of an entrepreneur, as one must garner relentless energy, creativity and a belief and faith in oneself as you blaze and pioneer new innovative paths/trails, break new ground.. and discover your niche... in your field of choice) As a result of my lifelong experiences and challenges that I’ve overcome, I am able to intuitively feel, appreciate and have great compassion for what others have been through. I've been there and am still there... continually soul-searching and evolving... learning daily to have compassion towards myself for my own imperfections, as I strive to become the best version of myself, as I mentor and coach the models & talent whom I represent through their own challenges and growth. Most women have to ‘unlearn’ shrinking themselves to live our authentic truths, passions and calling and we’ve had to relearn as our culture has changed... that ‘self-care’ and striving to live up to our highest potential is not ‘selfishness’. It’s liberating ourselves to stand on our own... to make our own impact... to be ‘seen’ and appreciated for ourselves and our own talents... not the shadow, sidekick or accessory of a partner/husband’s accomplishments... or seen solely in the role of ‘wife’ or ‘mother’. Many (like me) were raised absorbing the message of our patriarchal culture... and family... that as women, we should not ‘make waves’... or ‘appear too strong and outspoken’... not draw attention to ourselves or ‘don’t stand out’ too much. (or we’d be seen as self-centered/attention-seeking/selfish... non-nurturing, or God forbid bitchy’ or a bitch) I heard that from both my father and father-in-law when they spoke about strong, confident women and I absorbed that message from the culture in general. As women we have had to give ourselves permission to overcome these internalized barriers in our attempts to ‘be all we can be’... since it was role-modeled by our Mothers and ingrained in many of us that ‘nurturing/pleasing’ (rescuing) everyone and trying to resolve (fix) every situation around us is our primary responsibility and validation in life. (particularly if you were raised in a family in which there was illness... as I was... so of course I’ve always attempted to fix everything) It’s known as over-functioning. We wear multiple hats and most of us attempt to give 100% to them all... but we most often forget to ‘nurture’ and give compassion and appreciation to ourselves... instead we expect ourselves to do it all perfectly... (running ourselves ragged). It is humanly impossible to give 100% to everything at the same time, although I’ve always tried to. I’ve also learned it’s better to live our own destiny imperfectly than to live an imitation of somebody else's life. The world is waiting for each of our unique gifts!!! Our passions make us ‘come alive’... (anxiety blocks our creativity and passion). Tuning into our authentic selves requires us to call upon our highest energy and creativity... so that we are able to acccess and contribute our unique gifts... which is how we inspire others to do the same. No one is you and that is your SuperPower!!! Amidst the inevitable doubts... we must all Rock On!!!

FASHION MODEL ANGELIKA : Memories of and moving past our Covid Summer... and straight to Christmas it seems. Keep your face to the sun and you will never see t...he shadows." As The Beatles wrote in 1964: "Tomorrow may ... so let’s follow the sun." We need everybody’s positive energy to collectively fight the negativity (increasing cases and winter isolation of Covid and post-election antics and division) happening all around us at this uncertain moment in our daily lives in this country and the world... for the benefit of us all.

NY GOVERNOR ANDREW CUOMO, the Internet anointed ‘Love Gov’, whose profile has soared during our current pandemic, makes the MAY COVER of ROLLING STONE. Howard Stern in an interview called him a ‘ROCK STAR’, told him that his competence is sexy and that he would have beat Trump in a landslide, had he run for president (which Cuomo did contemplate doing last year). Howard asked that since he’s single... isn’t he lonely? Not now, he replied, I’m far too busy, but there may come a day. Cuomo has fought for and kept the country feeling stable and assured with his factual daily press briefings and 'get it done' attitude during this time of tumultuous uncertainty with news breaking daily of the ravages of this hidden rogue/killer virus. And the people listened and were calmed... knowing that we all have Andrew Cuomo in our corner.

Need to go pick up a few groceries... not what I’d CHOOSE to do on a typical Friday night... but... this ‘get-up ‘ should meet the CDC guidelines... I stitch...ed this number up by hand from some zebra fabric left over from a zebra dress which I had cut the hem off from 11 years ago to wear to New York Fashion Week. (BTW... this mask is not complete yet... finishing it up now... must fit tight on the sides and under the chin... still in progress) See more

MUST-WATCH EYE-OPENING VIDEO capturing the near-impossibility for girls and women in this day and age to ever meet the standards placed on us by our families, husbands, men, other women and society... knowing we are being harshly judged no matter what we do... and somehow we still all have to come to terms with accepting, loving (and healing) ourselves and have appreciation for all of our hard-earned gifts and talents, born of all we've experienced and survived.
