Our friends at the Erie Canal Museum are hosting a great lecture on February 17th about the engineer of Oswego Canal Mud Lock #5, which we included as part of the 2021 Eight That Can't Wait, our annual list of challenged and threatened properties. See information about the lecture in the post below!

ICYMI PACNY presents CR0WD: a Coalition of Preservationists, Planners, and Architects to Promote Circularity and Reuse. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States generated 600 million tons of construction and demolition debris in 2018, making it the largest single component of landfill waste (40%). Sadly, the vast majority of construction debris (90%) results from demolition rather than new construction. As preservationists, our primary efforts are... directed at saving buildings and promoting adaptive reuse. On January 20, PACNY presented a panel from members of the working group known as CR0WD (Circularity, Reuse and Zero Waste Development), to discuss their collaboration and goals along with their research and advocacy efforts in the field of deconstruction in reuse of building materials. Presenters included Bryan McCracken, Historic Preservation and Neighborhood Planner, City of Ithaca; Jennifer Minner, Associate Professor, City and Regional Planning and Director of Just Places Lab, Cornell University; Gretchen Worth, Project Director, Susan Christopherson Center for Community Planning; and Christine O’Malley, PhD, Preservation Services Coordinator of Historic Ithaca, Inc. "The building is a real-world symbol as evocative as any in Dickens’s canon. It tells the history of London’s treatment of the poor, which evolved fitfully from punitive to humane, as well as the city’s ambivalent approach to preserving its past." https://www.nytimes.com//dickens-condos-oliver-twist-workh

Another exciting project underway in the City of Syracuse! Pathfinder Bank are undertaking a rehabilitation of the former George C. Hanford House on West Onondaga Street, designed by Russell & King and constructed in 1910. This project will be using state and federal historic tax credits to help return the building to productive use. We look forward to this project contributing to the ongoing revitalization of the West Onondaga Street corridor!

It is with great sadness that we share the news that former PACNY President Jae Evangelisti has passed away. As so eloquently summarized by our friends at the Arts and Crafts Society of Central New York in the post below, Jae was instrumental in the revitalization of PACNY in the 1990s. He served as vice president from 1996 to 2000, and president from 2000 to 2004, and his efforts during this period contributed immeasurably to the preservation of many resources throughout Syracuse. Our thoughts are with his wife Peggy Chestnut, friends, and colleagues.

May is Historic Preservation Month! This month we will be highlighting the historic structures in our park. The Wesleyan Chapel hosted the First Women’s Rights ...Convention in 1848. Over the years the building was modified into a store, an opera house, a movie theater, and eventually a laundromat, among many other businesses that all left their mark. Finally, in 1985, the National Park Service took over and tried to put the chapel back together. In the image below you can see some of the reconstruction. The older bricks are what’s left of the original chapel, while the missing pieces were filled in with newer bricks of a different color. On the right side of the image, some of the original plaster is visible behind a glass partition. What is your favorite historic structure? Tell us (or show us) in the comments.

If you own an historic property, or even think you do, PACNY encourages you to learn about the 20% NYS Homeowner Historic Tax Credit Program that helps rehabilitate eligible residential properties. Learn what they can do for your home and the positive impact this program and historic preservation has on community revitalization in New York State. Presented by the Preservation League of New York State, the webinar will be held on January 13 at 6 PM. The webinar will be Syracuse-focused, but PACNY encourages anyone interested within our five-county region to attend. Details are available via Preservation League of New York State’s website (link in bio).

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP) has awarded PACNY with a 2020 New York State Historic Preservation Award for Excellence in historic Preservation organizational Achievement! After a tumultuous year in which our organization met a variety of challenges, PACNY is emerging with a renewed sense of purpose and energy. Despite the obstacles we have all faced, the support of our membership and fellow preservation advocates has kept us moving forward into the future (but with an eye to the past of course)! Thank you and we look forward to serving you in 2021!

PACNY is proud to partner with the Landmarks Society of Western New York, the Preservation League of New York State, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation to bring relevant and meaningful content to you at this year’s statewide preservation conference! Together with our Conference partners and sponsors, we’re also stretching out the breakout sessions over two days so that you don’t have to choose between your favorite sessions. With the new Opening Plenaries on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and Lightning Round presentations Tuesday evening, we’ll have more opportunities for that push the preservation field forward. Visit landmarksociety.org/conference for more info. AND don’t forget to apply for a range of scholarships still available to conference attendees!

Yesterday PACNY board member Andrew Eoblee met with members of the Circularity, Reuse, Zero Waste Development (CR0WD) Working Group and City of Auburn officials to investigate the National Register-listed Wall Street Episcopal Church. This church is on the National Register for Historic Places. According to a recent article: The Gothic Revival-style Wall Street church, however, is notable for having an early biracial congregation in the 19th century that included Harriet Tu...bman's nephew... The City of Auburn is pursuing demolition of this beautiful church that is in rough shape. So far the City does not have a plan in place to save even a single brick from the landfill, let alone reuse of the exquisite beams, stained glass windows, pews, etc. The Circularity, Reuse, Zero Waste Development (CR0WD) Working Group, was provided access to examine potential means of salvaging materials, and at the very least documenting how much will be lost and why there are barriers to both preservation and deconstruction of this church. It is an important case study. The church appeared on PACNY’s Eight That Can’t Wait endangered historic resources list, and PACNY has worked hard to try to find solutions. However, resources appear to be scarce. It is at the point where city officials and some in the neighborhood would prefer the church simply disappear. Yet there are precious and reusable materials throughout. Demolitions are tragically common in upstate New York, and innovative ways need to be found to preserve the building materials and interior features that will otherwise get dumped in the Seneca Meadows landfill. #CR0WD #justplaceslab #susanchristophersoncenterforcommunityplanning #demolition #salvage #reuse #reuse hashtag on Instagram Photos and Videos 0 Posts - See Instagram photos and videos from ‘reuse’ hashtag nd Andrew R.
