Lighting a candle and placing it in the window on Christmas Eve is an old Irish tradition dating back to Penal Times. During that time, Catholicism was outlawe...d and priests were threatened with death for saying Mass. Catholics took to placing a candle in the window as a sign that it was safe for a priest to enter. We invite you to safely display a candle in your window tonight as a ray of light in the darkness of this pandemic, a beacon of hope to all and a visible signal that we have faith and that together we will conquer this darkness. FROM THE WOODLAWN HEIGHTS AND TAXPAYERS COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Dear Neighbor, Due to the recent electrical outage that affected much of Woodlawn, many local res...idents lost all of the food in their refrigerators and freezers -- which, in most cases, will be extremely expensive to replace. However, Con Edison has previously refused to cover losses caused by storms. Board members of the Woodlawn Heights Taxpayers & Community Association felt that this was unacceptable. We immediately contacted Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz and Council Member Andy Cohen to ensure that Con Ed would step up and reimburse customers affected by a power loss due to Hurricane Isaias. Thanks to our advocacy and theirs, Con Ed has now agreed to cover these expenses, and just published a new claim form specifically for losses as a result of Hurricane Isaias. This form may be found here. (If the link doesn't work for you, email us and we will send it as an attachment.) The rules are as follows: -- You must have lost power for at least 48 hours; -- For amounts up to $235, you must include a list of items that spoiled (receipts are not necessary); -- For amounts between $235 - $540, you must provide proof, such as cash register receipts, credit card charges, or photos of spoiled items; -- You must submit your claim before 9/8/2020. (See Con Ed's claim form for more information and details about how and where to submit your claim.) Please forward this email to your friends and neighbors. Anyone who would like to receive future emails from the Woodlawn Taxpayers Association should send their name, home/apartment address, and email address to [email protected], attention Shawn Guffey. The Board of the Woodlawn Taxpayers Association sincerely hope that all our neighbors are well after this latest crisis to strike our community. If you are able, please offer your help to a neighbor in need. Woodlawn's greatest strength is always the way its residents love, help, and respect their neighbors. Sincerely, The Woodlawn Heights Taxpayers & Community Association
