Happy 112th Anniversary to the NAACP! W. E. B. Du Bois was a co-founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Director of Publicity and Research during his time on the org's Executive Board (1910-1934). Ida B. Wells, considered a PR Pioneer, was also famously part of the founding of the #NAACP. Du Bois started the committee's official publication "The Crisis," editing in creative pieces from African Americans and news about race is...sues. The NAACP has long advocated for African American civil liberties, and continues to be a strong, vital civil rights organization today. #BlackHistoryMonth #PRHistory

1956--Once the polio vaccine was made available to the public, thousands of children throughout the US lined up to get their shots. But teens--under the impression that only young children could get polio-- were refusing the vaccination. The March of Dimes (aka-Foundation for the Prevention of Infantile Paralysis) launched a public awareness campaign using teens themselves to create and implement programs focused on changing their attitudes. Their ideas included rebranding "Sock Hops" as "Salk Hops," a tribute to the vaccine's inventor. Another was a publicity campaign urging girls not to accept a date with a guy unless he could prove he had gotten the vaccine. But the idea that truly moved the needle was arranging for Elvis Presley to get the shot live on the Ed Sullivan show, then the most popular variety program on TV.

Communications with the public during the polio pandemic took place over the radio, newspapers and newsreels. By the 1930s, despite the Depression, most American households had a radio in the home, large cabinets that the family would sit around to hear soap operas, the news, FDR's fireside chats, as well as, classes over the air, as this photo depicts.

The Trump Administration has tested our political norms like none other in recent history. As the Trump presidency draws to a close, the Biden presidency about to begin, two special senatorial elections that will determine the balance of power in the Senate on the horizon, and the prospect of precedent setting presidential pardons a daily threat, it’s time to look back on where we have been these past four years, distill the lessons to be learned, and project where we will b...e heading. #ThatSaid join Michael Zeldin as he speaks with CNN’s Abby Phillip, Political Correspondent, and Manu Raju, Senior Congressional Correspondent, to break down what to expect at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and on Capitol Hill. How will this divided government work, if at all? Who will hold the keys to success or stalemate? How will centers of power shift if the Democrats win the two Georgia Senate seats, win one, or lose both? Featuring an Introduction by Lawrence J. Parnell, Associate Professor & Program Director, Masters in Strategic Public Relations GSPM, Adjunct Professor School of Business, The George Washington University Register here: https://tinyurl.com/y48jnx7r

When Sherry Goldman brought her LIU PR class to the Museum a few years ago, the students had a chance to get a hands-on lesson on the history of Edelman and its... campaigns. Thanks to the generosity of Renee Edelman, we were able to exhibit more than 40 different artifacts documenting the success of the firm and its most famous programs. Students saw clippings from the Toni Twins media tour; the press kit from the California Wines campaign; and releases announcing the Butterball Turkey hotline. Most exciting was Dan's huge clipping book, with hundreds and hundreds of Burrelles clippings from the 50s-70s. The students also got to hear from Dan and Ruth themselves from the videos we shot in 2002. See more

October 30: Today marks 114 years since the first press release was published! #PRPioneer Ivy Ledbetter Lee first introduced the press release in 1904. The idea was to encourage accurate reporting and give a corporationor figurethe opportunity to share their news in their own words. It was meant to be the bridge of communications between the company and the public. In October 1906, he put the idea into practice when retained by the Pennsylvania Railroad, and the company... experienced a train wreck. Rather than hide the details as the company was used to, Lee gave an inside look from the scene via press release and successfully generated good press from an unfortunate incident. The NY Times even published the release verbatim, something that was not normal in those times. The line that stuck out most: The Pennsylvania Railroad Company is leaving nothing undone to get at the cause of the accident. Ivy Lee’s life and development of public relations in America is written in detail in Courtier to the Crowd by Ray Eldon Hiebert. The Museum of Public Relations’ publishing house, PRMuseum Press published a 50th Anniversary Edition of the biography on Ivy Lee in 2017. It can be purchased at prmuseumpress.com. #PRHistory #PRMuseum #PublicRelations #PR #PRPros #PressRelease

April 2, 1948, the U.S. Coast Guard reorganized its entire enlisted structure by creating, eliminating and combining several enlisted ratings. In the summer of 1949, Alex Haley, the most famous Coast Guard journalist to date, rec...eived a transfer into the rating and would become the first chief journalist of the Coast Guard later that year. Did you know that in 2003 the term embedded journalism was coined? Embedded journalism refers to news reporters being attached to military units involved in armed conflict. While the term could be applied to many historical interactions between journalists and military personnel, it was used first in the media coverage of the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
