Autumn Fun Fact: In many places in the world, Autumn reveals a variety of beautiful colored leaves. Each tree produces different colors that announce the rhythm of the changing seasons. Trees rely on the strong Spring and Summer sunlight to give energy to their leaves. In turn, the leaves use Chlorophyll (a green pigment) to produce nutrients for the tree. However the leaves also contain other hidden pigments such as Xanthophylls (yellows, Carotenoids (oranges), and Anthocya...nins (reds). Each type of tree has a different mix of these pigments. When the temperature gets lower and the daylight gets shorter, leaves get the signal to stop producing food for the trees. As the Chlorophyll breaks down, the bright colors can emerge and give us the beauty of Autumn leaves! Once the leaf ends it’s food production, it will fall to the ground and become fertilizer for the soil, or get raked up! What do you love about Autumn leaves?
