Psychotherapy & Spirituality Institute announces appointment of new Executive Director Sarah Segal McCaslin, M. Div, LCSW has been named the new Executive Director of the Psychotherapy and Spirituality Institute (PSI) and will assume her new role on January 4, 2021. Her leadership begins at a critical time in our city and in PSI’s 45-year history. In addition to providing spiritually-informed psychotherapy for individuals, couples and families, PSI hosts conferences and conti...nuing education programs; offers consulting services to organizations, businesses and faith communities; and supervises both graduate and undergraduate students. The Board of Trustees announced the choice of Sarah after a selection process that involved PSI Board and staff. According to the Rev. John Kamas, current Board chair and PSI-affiliate for over 25 years, We are in a time of tremendous transition. PSI must navigate this new time and adapt to a rapidly changing world. We are so very glad that Sarah has accepted the challenge to assume the mantle of Executive Director during this important time of transition. We look forward to the future and our collaboration. Mary Ragan, PhD, LCSW, a long-time staff member, says of Sarah’s appointment: There is no better person to lead our organization at this point in time. Sarah has the clinical competence, pastoral experience and interpersonal skill to bring PSI to a wider world. She believes in our mission and has passion about spirituality as a resource for achieving healing and wholeness. Prior to her tenure at PSI, Sarah worked in various congregational settings and nonprofits in New York City, including Project Renewal, the Jewish Home and Hospital, The First Presbyterian Church In The City of New York, and St. Lydia's in Brooklyn. Sarah is a licensed clinical social worker and an ordained Presbyterian minister. She is a graduate of Columbia University School of Social Work and Union Theological Seminary. She also holds a post-graduate certificate in family therapy from the Ackerman Institute for the Family. She is excited to be leading PSI at this time in the organization’s history. In her words: One of my favorite sayings is this blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape! With flexibility, we are able to lean into difficult spaces and discover new capacities in ourselves, our relationships and our communities. I see this in my role as therapist, mom, pastor, human being, and now the new leader of PSI, which itself has modeled endurance and adaptability in its service to New York City through such stressful experiences as September 11th, 2001, the economic crisis of 2008, and now this global health pandemic. My hope is to broaden our reach in NYC and beyond, through ongoing clinical work, consultation, public programming and training.

If you know, you know...

The Psychotherapy & Spirituality Institute 15.09.2020

For One Who Is Exhausted by John O'Donahue When the rhythms of the heart become hectic, time takes on the strain until it breaks;... then all the unattended stress falls in on the mind like endless, increasing weight. The light of the mind becomes dim. Things you could take in your stride before now become laborsome events of will. Weariness invades your spirit. Gravity begins falling inside you, dragging down every bone. The tide you never valued has gone out. And you are marooned on unsure ground. Something within you has closed down; and you cannot push yourself back to life. You have been forced to enter empty time. The desire that drove you has relinquished. There is nothing else to do now but rest and patiently learn to receive the self you have forsaken in the race of days. At first your thinking will darken and sadness take over like listless weather. The flow of unwept tears will frighten you. You have traveled too fast over false ground; now your soul has come to take you back. Take refuge in your senses, open up to all the small miracles you rushed through. Become inclined to watch the way of rain when it falls slow and free. Imitate the habit of twilight, taking time to open the well of color that fostered the brightness of day. Draw alongside the silence of stone until its calmness can claim you. Be excessively gentle with yourself. Stay clear of those vexed in spirit. Learn to linger around someone of ease who feels they have all the time in the world. Gradually, you will return to yourself, having learned a new respect for your heart and the joy that dwells far within slow time. #ToBlessTheSpaceBetweenUs #sabbathwisdom

In response to high demand, PSI has released additional tickets for this virtual conference, taking place Friday, September 25, 10:00 am - 5:30 pm. Register: https://tinyurl.com/psi-conference-2020 Dr. Dick Schwartz is the founder of Internal Family Systems (IFS), a therapeutic model that combines systems thinking with the view that the mind is composed of discrete yet intertwined sub-personalities or parts with their own viewpoint and purpose.... Addiction has classically been defined as a disease and a compulsive behavior that interferes with daily living. Thus addicts must remain hyper-vigilant against the ever-present enemy of addiction. Schwartz, however, will reframe addiction as sacred protection from deeper pain that can be healed and transformed with curiosity and compassion. Thus, loving our inner addicted parts is the key to liberating them. 5.5 Continuing Education Credits and/or Units (CEUs) are available to LMFTs, LMHCs, LCSWs, LMSWs, and LCATs. 3 CEC's are available towards IFS certification for those who have completed Level 1 IFS training. PSI is proud to partner with the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, The Interfaith Center of New York, The Internal Family Systems Institute and Trinity Church Wall Street.

"What exactly is the self, how does it get lost, and where does it go? And how is it that creativity can serve as a homing device, retrieving our wayward sense of 'me-ness' and returning it to our awareness?" - from "The Self, Lost and Found: How creativity holds up a mirror to your inner world" by PSI therapist Kim Schneiderman, L.C.S.W. (Step Out of Your Story), via Psychology Today. Read more: https://psinyc.org/the-self-lost-and-found/ Kim will be leading Internal Family Systems-inspired writing exercises in our Sept. 25 conference "Exploring the Inner Addict in the Time of COVID: Addiction, Spirituality and Internal Family Systems" with Dr. Richard Schwartz. The Psychotherapy & Spirituality Institute 28.07.2020

Internal Family Systems (IFS) recognizes that every person comes into the world with a spiritual wholeness called self energy. That energy is calm, compassionate, connected, clear, courageous, creative, curious, and confident - all of which are sacred qualities. In other words, everyone has an innate sense of holiness. As the child matures, he/she/they can lose touch with those qualities in response to trauma, rejection, neglect, etc and, consequently, develop protective part...s to help survive childhood. IFS holds that healing happens when well-intentioned but perhaps extreme protective parts recognize and begin to trust the adult self to bring self energy to wounded parts, so they can be unburdened from their pain, and restored to the divine self energy. It should be noted that IFS founder Richard Schwartz considers his model spiritual, and even (in more advanced levels) addresses spirit guide parts. Our annual conference on Sept. 25 features the founder of IFS, Dr. Dick Schwartz. Info on the conference: https://tinyurl.com/psi-conference-2020 Internal Family Systems
