This photo which is inverted for better view of two angles shows two problems to me! First, the boxing drill of executing inside defense vs. Cross Punch is not... realistic. This form is only good against Southpow Drop Punch or a Jab. Over the years boxers practiced many drills and many of them were unrealistic and never worked in a bout! The tactical error is to assume that someone would skip the Jab or Drop Punch and you will be able to block his cross if you train hard. Realistically, the second someone is lunging with the Jab or Drop Punch you have to start you block before he reaches the hotzone. If you are letting him stand in the hotzone close enough where if he lead you have no time to command your hand to block him and to execute the block while you cannot know when his brain commanded his arm to commence the attack, you will alwasy be a step behind and he will be a step ahead. Therefore you must block the arm that is closer to you when he moves in and coutner attack and not wait for the cross to come. If he skips the Cross, you would block the air and counter attack. The second error I see, is that the thought that if you catch him you would prevent him from being able to leverage other attacks. Well waiting for the cross endangers you to take the Jab get distracted and then take the full Cross! But lets say if he is doing as you say and throwing the Cross first, and retracting, his retracting elbow might block your rib punch. The other tactical point is that straight punches have greater range than hooks and uppercuts, and if you move closer without immediately hitting him but grabbing him first he might be able to retract the Cross and come up with a left hook, or move on to some sort of grappling maneuver... Prioritization is the principle that rules in Pure Krav Maga! You want to use the least amount of time to produce maximum control! If you can reach a soft press...ure point in the head this is what you are aiming for. If you cannot, you use other pressure points that can be reached first until you get your opponent under sufficient control. Sufficient control could mean killing him if you are much weaker and know if you don’t it could result in immediate retaliation and you might become crippled physically or mentally or both or you might become dead! Punches are used in the punching range out of the hotzone. Elbows are used as a follow up attack, or counter attacks for some hand grabs and body holds in the close range, or surprise attack. But with an elbow you have to start inside the hotzone, so if you do it after the distraction of a kick or a punch its fine, but if you just walk to someone and elbow him by surprise, don’t expect 100 percent success against a hand to hand combat trained opponent because he will not let you get that close and attack you beforehand. Punching while grabbing is good only for sports like MMA because eye gouging and throat plucking does not make sense in a sport. However, for a weaker person or even stronger and same amount of force plucking tearing and gouging soft pressure points end the play of exchange of weak blows immediately! In that range your body is entangled and you cannot shift all your weight to deliver one knockout strike, so each sprit second that passes could end in reversal of fortunes and you can end up dead! The Cervical Spine is one of the best Knockout Killing Pressure Points. In order to reach behind the attacker's head a groin kick would bend him in half letting us reach this pressure points from the front!
