#BuffaloHomesGuarantee #BuffaloTBR Sign the petition today!... Local tenant leaders and housing justice advocates, including PUSH Buffalo and Citizen Action of NY, launched the Buffalo Homes Guarantee campaign in late April 2020 on the steps of Buffalo's Housing Court with the release of a 10-point Buffalo Tenant Bill of Rights and calls for the Buffalo Common Council and Mayor Byron Brown to take immediate action to protect vulnerable tenants, preserve and expand safe, healthy, and affordable housing, and stop gentrification and displacement in our neighborhoods. Now, with a temporary eviction moratorium in New York State set to expire and mass evictions on the horizon, we're demanding that our City leaders enact a Buffalo Tenant Bill of Rights!

Kwanzaa, which starts today and goes through January 1st, was founded in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, then a leader of a community organization in Los Angeles called Us, and modeled after the harvest or first fruits celebrations in ancient Egypt, West Africa’s New Yam Festival and other celebrations on the African continent. Kwanzaa has seven core principles, or Nguzo Saba: Unity, self-determination, collective world and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativit...y, and faith. May we recommit to live these principles every day of the year. Happy Kwanzaa! #BlackPowerMatters #ANewWorldIsPossible #Kwanzaa2020

City & State's Energy & Environment Power 100 identifies the key players who are driving the debate - and the policies - here in New York. PUSH Buffalo's Executive Director Rahwa Ghirmatzion is named to the list. Congrats Rahwa and thank you for your leadership in Buffalo, WNY, and NYS! "A leading climate justice champion in Western New York is People United for Sustainable Housing Buffalo, or PUSH Buffalo, which is run by Rahwa Ghirmatzion. Ghirmatzion, who fled a civil war in Eritrea and came to the U.S. with her family as a refugee, has led PUSH Buffalo since 2018, advocating against steep energy rake hikes, assisting with solar installation and promoting energy efficiency. PUSH Buffalo is also on the steering committee of NY Renews.

"Andrew Delmonte, PUSH Buffalo's director of cooperative development, suggested the possibility of the worker-owned model...."Someone could work at Amy's Place and be invested in the place and be able to get dividends at the end of the year," said Kempf about the worker-cooperative model. "They'd be motivated to make a profit. They'd have equity [in the company]."

Sources both inside and outside the legislature say Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie is pushing back against the Senate Democrats' proposal for a blanket moratorium. What do we want? A universal eviction moratorium. When do we want it? NOW!

The residents of the City of Buffalo have been petitioning their elected officials for years to defund the police and invest our money in communities of color and much-needed community services. The people have been clear about their priorities and they couldn't be more different from those of City Hall, said Harper Bishop, Deputy Director of Movement Building at PUSH Buffalo. While the Mayor and the Buffalo Common Council plan to spend $3.9 million in unproven technological solutions and unnecessary new weapons under the guise of reform, the people are once again voicing their opposition to it and instead offering community-based solutions that will create a more equitable, safe, and just Buffalo for all."

"National Grid, the United Kingdom-based electric power monopoly serving more than 100,000 households in the City of Buffalo and hundreds of thousands more across upstate New York, is asking the state for permission to hike electric rates by more than $100 million. The company is also seeking an additional $41 million rate hike on its upstate methane gas customers. Buffalo where one out of every three households is already facing unaffordable housing and utility costs simply cannot afford another rate hike to pad the profits of a multibillion dollar, multinational corporation."
