Since World War I, the red poppy has been a symbol of remembrance and a way of honoring those who served and lost their lives in war. Veterans groups such as the American Legion distribute millions of red crepe paper poppies and encourage people to wear them on National Poppy Day, which is the Friday before Memorial Day each year. But how did the red poppy become such an iconic flower? The fierce artillery battles and trench warfare on the Western Front of WWI, in the Flande...rs region of Belgium, decimated the landscape. In 1915, the second year of the war, soldiers began taking note of the red flowers that sprang up in the killing fields all around them. They must have seemed like a miracle. Common poppies, Papaver rhoeas, need light to germinate, and can lay dormant for 80 years or more until the soil is disturbed. Lime from destroyed buildings and nitrogen from bombs fertilized them, and they began to bloom in abundance. In the spring of 1915, Lt. Col. John McCrae, a Canadian doctor serving as a medical officer for the 1st Canadian Field Artillery, sat overlooking a mass grave site. He took out pen and paper and wrote what would become one of the most enduring poems of World War I, In Flanders Fields. In Flanders fields, the poppies blow, Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard above the guns below McCrae’s poem was first published in Punch Magazine and widely reprinted. A YMCA war volunteer, Moina Michael, had seen the poem before. But in November of 1918, two days before the Armistice was declared, she ran across it again. It was a pivotal moment in the history of the red poppy. In her autobiography, The Miracle Flower, she described the moment as a full spiritual experience, in which she vowed always to wear a red poppy as a sign of remembrance. Moina Michael’s idea quickly gained support from the YMCA, the American Legion and its Auxiliary, and the Veterans Of Foreign Wars. The Legion adopted the poppy as its flower in 1920, and in 1924 created a national program to distribute red poppies annually. In 2017, Congress formally declared the Friday before Memorial Day as National Poppy Day. American Legion poppies are named in honor of this century-long movement to keep alive the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Read more about the history of the red poppy on our blog. We hope you will take time this Memorial Day weekend to reflect on the meaning of the red poppy and the sacrifices of military veterans and their families. We thank them for their sacrifice and for their service. #putnamsheriffNY #putnamcountyNY #memorialday2021 #veterans

Thank you to you all! Across the country on January 9th each year, citizens take the lead to show support on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Law Enforcement Officers of every rank and file have chosen a profession that puts their life on the line every day for their communities. The...y’ve answered a call to public service that is demanding and often unappreciated. From local, state, and federal, their duties command dedication. The jobs are often thankless and take them away from their families for long hours. Rarely do they know what their days have in store for them. Often law enforcement are the only paid emergency resource a community has. More often they work in coordination with other local, state, and federal organizations to make communities safer. On National Law Enforcement Day, we have an opportunity to thank them for their service and offer a token of respect. HOW TO OBSERVE #LawEnforcementAppreciationDay There are several ways to show your support. Send a note of thanks to your local, county or state police agency. Wear blue, turn your social media channels blue or shine a blue porch light to show your support. Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley, Jr., Town of Carmel Police Department Acting Chief John Dearman, and Town of Kent Police Department Chief Kevin Owens announced today that Law Enforcement agencies in Putnam County will participate in a special enforcement effort to crack down on impaired driving. Halloween is meant to be scary, but not when it comes to driving. When it comes to drunk driving Halloween can turn the roads into a horror fest. While we spend time trick or... treating and hosting parties with loved ones, law enforcement officers across New York State will take to the roads in an effort to stop impaired driving, prevent injuries and save lives. The statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown efforts start on October 30, 2020, and will end on November 1, 2020. New York State Police, County Sheriffs, and municipal law enforcement agencies across the state and will be out in force, Research shows that high visibility enforcement can reduce impaired driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent. Sobriety checkpoints play a key part in raising awareness about the problem. The STOP-DWI Halloween Weekend Crackdown is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Throughout the remainder of the year, the Statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign will also target Thanksgiving, and the national Holiday Season in December. While STOP-DWI efforts across New York have led to significant reductions in the numbers of alcohol and drug-related fatalities, still too many lives are being lost because of crashes caused by drunk or impaired drivers. Recently the Suffolk County Police Academy hosted a NYS DCJS Defensive Tactics Instructor Certification Course. Nearly 30 Law Enforcement professionals from throughout NYS were certified over two weeks by our own Deputy Mike Varley. Deputy Varley is one of only a selected few instructors recognized by NYS DCJS with the ability to teach this 'Train The Trainer' course. These newly certified DT instructors will now bring these techniques back to their respective Departments to... train their own officers and recruits in LEO academies across New York State. We are fortunate at the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department to have such a highly skilled and dedicated professional such as Mike who instills de-escalation skills in our officers while ensuring they receive proper defensive tactics. #putnamsheriffNY #putnamcountyNY #defensivetactics #academy #suffolkcountyNY #NYSDCJS
