Dear all, Please join NYC Health + Hospitals for a special event in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month in May and Pride Month in June to highlight the experiences of LGBTQ people in accessing mental health care. ... The event features a free, virtual screening of the award-winning new documentary CURED, which takes viewers inside the battle that led the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its manual of mental illnesses in 1973. The documentary is available to stream anytime between now and May 20th. In conjunction with the film screening, there will also be a virtual panel discussion on Wednesday, May 19th at 6:30pm EST to reflect on the discrimination that LGBTQ people face in mental health care and discuss solutions for improving access moving forward. The panel will feature Ashe McGovern, LGBTQ Policy Advisor for the NYC Mayor’s Office and Executive Director of NYC Unity Project, Kylie Madhav, Mental Health Services Manager for the LGBT Community Center, Dr. Omar Fattal, Deputy Medical Director for the Office of Behavioral Health at NYC Health + Hospitals, and Bennett Singer, Co-Director of CURED. Hello All! We are cancelling our community building meeting for this week. We will see you next week! This year has been extremely challenging for all of us. There has been a lot of loss, grieving, heartache, confusion and frustration, but we are thankful to have been able to keep our center going to the best of our abilities and with the amazing help of our friends at Stonewall Village NYC, we are thriving with our online programming! You are on our minds and in our hea...rts with each passing day. We miss coming out into the main room to hear it filled with laughter and special moments, but we will have those again! Seniors will self film their stories with guidance, and the videos will be used on social media as part of the campaign. ... Below are the topics that one could speak to: Physical health services (COVID testing, gender-affirming therapy, primary care, etc.) Mental health services Age-specific services Legal services Housing and shelter services Food security services This video will be used for a campaign put out by the NYS LGBT Network, they will provide a small honorarium of $200 for your time and energy. We will be distributing our monthly food boxes which contain 15 lbs of non perishable food items tomorrow Tuesday, October 27th between 11:00am- 2:00pm at our center. Please bring a cart to take things home as the boxes are heavy. This will be given out on a first come first serve basis to those who are 60+. Catalyzing the movement was the gay-biased murder of Julio Rivera as well as the homophobic outcry towards the Children of the Rainbow public school program. Join project manager Amanda Davis as we highlight sites throughout her home borough of Qu...eens, with a focus on Jackson Heights, that connect to New York City’s LGBT history. From popular Latino gay and lesbian bars, such as Friends Tavern and the now-shuttered Bum Bum Bar, to spaces such as the Community United Methodist Church, we'll discuss sites that helped establish Jackson Heights as an important center of queer social life and activism beyond Manhattan.
