As you know, in late March Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Below is an update on the three main components of the bill direct payments to taxpayers, unemployment benefits, and relief for small businesses. Direct Payments to Taxpayers: The IRS will begin distributing direct payments to qualifying Americans starting April 17. Individual tax filers with income of up to $75,000 will receive a full payment of $1,200. Married coup...les filing joint tax returns with income of up to $150,000 will receive a full payment of $2,400, and $500 for each qualifying child under 16 years old. For more information, including eligibility and whether you need to apply for your direct payment, ***Social Security recipients are eligible and do not need to file a return. Unemployment Benefits: Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) covers people who are unemployed or partly unemployed due to a wide variety of Coronavirus-related reasons. If you file for unemployment in the State of New York between January 27, 2020 December 31, 2020, you are eligible for a total of 39 weeks of unemployment, 13 more weeks than normal. Most workers impacted by the pandemic are also eligible to receive an extra $600 per week in addition to the unemployment benefits offered by their state, through the end of July. After July, unemployed workers will receive the normal weekly payment of $504. To file a claim, you can apply online here or call 1-888-209-8124. Relief for Small Businesses: The CARES Act includes several programs and initiatives intended to assist small businesses including: The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) provides small businesses with interest-free, forgivable, loans for 2.5 times monthly payroll of up to $10 million. Loans may be forgivable if employees are kept on payroll. Apply and learn more here.
