Stewards Reports and Project Site Updates for June 1st, 2020 GENERAL The city finally picked up the trash bags we set out at Rahma and 610 Gifford as part of ou...r Adopt-A-Block membership, over 4 weeks after we placed them there and requested pickup. We can continue to place bagged trash at each site and calling it in to 448-CITY for pickup. RAHMA Message from Andrew: "I concentrated on the bindweed in the SE corner till my battery died. Then I cleaned up cleavers that we missed around the golden raspberries. There is young bindweed in that area that we need to stay on top of. There are some brambles in the NW corner with some rust just so you know. I didn't touch the second raised bed because there is a nice burdock and some melissa that someone at the house might want to harvest. Let me know when it's ok to clear that bed. I didn't touch any of the woody plants this time." I'll be heading to Rahma next Saturday, taking a break from 610 and 713 to give the forest garden some attention, I hope some folks can join. I got the new electric mower and will bring it next weekend. If anyone wants to collect cardboard, rip off the plastic tape and staples, and bring to Rahma for next Saturday, we will do some sheet mulching as well. Scheduling for 11am-1pm there - rsvp at https://www.facebook.com/events/3007327125988800/ 610 GIFFORD The shade structure is almost complete, maybe another hour or two max, Jamie will stop by at some point to install the corner bracing and extensions, then we can work on the shade fabric attachment. Potato planting can occur this weekend, I think that the remainder of the planting area within the stone border, next to the other potatoes (in front of the elderberry), can be cleared of groundcover and grasses, and potatoes planted for an activity. I have tons from a donation, if anyone wants to stop by and grab some from my porch. As always, weekly weeding outside of bed edges, within strawberry plantings, and within beds if you know what you're doing. Watering isdependent, we don't need to water every week just cause we are there, it is always dependent on the last rain and the forecast. I'll be getting over this week Tuesday or Wednesday to weedwack and clean up the lawn areas some. Repairing of raised pallet beds can also commence at any time, adding edge boards, replacing broken or rotten boards, etc. Talk to me about materials and tools. 713 MARCELLUS Taking this week off from any organized volunteering at 713 Marcellus. But, that doesn't have to stop the progress, if you want to contribute we need to continue the interior paint scraping (walls, ceilings, floors - might not be paint, might be rotting tiles such as is kitchen). This past Saturday we had 9 folks come out and help, we made decent progress, and also cut some plexi to size for the front windows, and will get that installed soon I hope. The other main work we need to start considering is access logistics/membership/tools inventory software/communications/etc. I'd be happy to hear ideas, or to share research and writing tasks that might need done if you're willing. p.s. "melissa" is what many know as lemon balm. Sincerely ~ Frank

Here are a few photos found in our past outreach. Pretty amazing to see the bare ground transformed in a forest garden!
Great memories from Rahma Edible Forest Snack Garden over time. Alchemical Nursery is looking for stewardship team members to host occasional forest gardening days this summer, at public community gardens around Syracuse. We have a Stewardship Team Orientation coming up midday March 28 for Rahma Edible Forest Snack Garden. I've found getting involved with this mutual aid permaculture group to be great for (learning): gardening,... plant & tree propagation, and home / community-scale agroforestry. Much thanks. Connect with a forest garden near you, and spread the word! Peace ~Robbie
