This year RIPA participated in the 121st Annual Christmas Bird Count! Starting on Christmas Day of 1900, this concerted nation-wide effort, to identify and count the birds spotted, is one of the longest-running community science projects in the country. Data from this long-running wildlife census are used to assess the health of bird populations, and to help guide conservation action. On Sunday, Dec 20th, our staff embarked on a birding adventure and surveyed Randall’s Island... Park - spotting and identifying 25 different species of birds and 835 individual birds in total. In honor of the holidays, here are our results from the count! Species of birds found on Randall's Island included: - greater white-fronted goose - downy woodpecker - northern mockingbird - blue jay - red-tailed hawk - white-throated sparrow - song sparrow ...And many more! This important data will be uploaded to the NYC Audubon Christmas Bird Count database. Check out some of the photos our team snapped during the count! (Birds pictured: northern mockingbird, double-crested cormorant, great blue heron, red-tailed hawk, white-throated sparrow, and the greater white-fronted goose). While participating in the 121st annual Christmas Bird Count, our staff spotted the greater white-fronted goose among a flock of Canada geese in the Bronx Kill! These birds are usually found further west in the Mississippi Valley and along the West Coast - a rare treat for NYC! Here are some possible reasons that could explain how the greater white-fronted goose wound up in NYC: - During their migration, it’s possible for birds to take a "wrong turn" and end up outside th...eir normal ranges. This may occur due to birds getting mixed up in their somewhat mysterious directional navigation or a storm that could have blown the bird off-course of its normal route. - Sometimes animals that gather together, will congregate with similar species when they get separated from their own flock. For the greater white-fronted goose, it's possible that when it became lost or separated from the others of its species, it found safety with the Canada geese who share a similar habitat. Check back in with us later in the week, as we will release our final results from the 121st annual Christmas Bird count on Christmas Day!
