Happy memorial day weekend!Tomorrow night we are open from 4 PM to seven. Come get your grilling needs for the weekend as we will not be open this Saturday. Maybe it’s one of these tasty 8 ounce ribeyes that come two in a package. Maybe it’s just some quality ground beef to cook some burgers along with your dogs. We got you covered! Mother Nature sure has been easy on us although we could use a bit of rain! We are on to cutting hay. Capturing the grass and alfalfa at its peak nutrition is the goal. This not only provides optimal digestible fiber, it also is a protein source for our cows diets. This allows us to minimize purchase inputs to balance their diet properly. As the plant matures, nutrients become less available to the animal and it just goes out the back end! More mature grasses are targeted toward young stock and non lactating cows. Their protein and energy requirements are no where near as high as the high producing lactating animals. Hay is mowed, allowed to wilt out some moisture,and harvested all in a 24 hour period. Then it’s stored where it ferments to be fed out at a later date!

The tractor wheels have started turning! At the beginning of a new crop season we start by planting new grass alfalfa mixture fields. This field will remain a mixture for the next 5 years and then go back to corn. Crop rotation helps return nutrients to the soil without synthetic inputs. The practice also works to interrupt pest and disease cycles, improve soil health by increasing biomass from different crops' root structures, and increase biodiversity on the farm, making for a healthier environment!

Osso bucco is an Italian comfort that traditionally is prepared with veal shanks but works well with beef shanks also. This easy slow cooker recipe is hearty and delicious and goes well with the weather that we will start to see! We have plenty of osso bucco in stock, so give it a try! Remember low and slow! Some timely rain has finally spurred some regrowth in the pasture. We will see if it’s enough feed to keep everyone content. Otherwise we will start to supplement forage to maintain proper condition and health. We are open tomorrow with some stock left.
