The day before MLK was assassinated he gave his "I've Been to the Mountaintop" sermon in honor of striking sanitation workers in Memphis. Every city on the planet relies on the tireless, important work of sanitation workers and we urge you to contact your local reps and demand that they treat sanitation workers with respect, pay them fairly, guarantee safe working conditions, and give them official first responder status. #MLK #sanitation #sanitationworkers #wastespecialists #sani #sanman #garbage #trash #publichealth #fairwages #protection

#LessonsFromTheBin is a new series where we'll highlight #wisdom and #teachings from the tiny creatures that #decompose #organicwaste and make #composting possible! Like #seeds, #microbes and #worms don't have to say a word but they can teach us so much about life, purpose, community, and working together toward a common goal! They teach us lessons that are unspoken but clearly understood if we take the time to #learn. (Image description: Text that reads "Lessons from the Bi...n: We all have unique skills and talents that we can put to good use in our communities. When we play to our strengths, and collaborate with other people playing to their own, we can change our world for the better" alongside images of cartoon worms and a pile of food scraps) #composters #greenwaste #community #commongroundcompost #sustainability #greenjobs #organicscollection #manhattan #newyorkcity #greennewdeal #coreact #environmentaljustice #reclaimedorganics #compost #ropudo #dropoff #nyc #regenerativeeconomy #saveourcompost

COMPOST BENEFITS: STORMWATER AND COMPOST How does it work? When compost is used as a soil amendment it improves filtration, reduces runoff, and increases capacity for water storage. ... Where does this happen? Compost can be added to rain gardens, green roofs, lawns, trenches, and other places to slow the flow of stormwater in certain landscapes. Any other benefits? Since compost helps filter stormwater runoff, some cities take full advantage to protect water supply and reduce flooding. Why does this matter? Healthier soil means less absorption of toxins carried in stormwater which, in turn, reduces pollution on land and in the water. This benefits people, animals, and vegetation in diverse ecosystems.
