As the government refuses to fund reparations, consider what that portends for future debate about helping folks displaced by climate change. Our inability to reckon with past government decisions makes it all-the-more important to pass robust climate policy now. It doesn’t just give us the best shot at adapting.... It’s the only way we avoid a future where rich people living in walled-off enclaves shout at refugees, the decisions that destroyed your homes were made so long ago. How can you hold me responsible for what my ancestors did?
For posts. I’m off today on an adventure to the South with my husband, Rev. John Janka. We met on a project to disrupt racism. Became friends. Fell in love. Married. Still in the race against racism. Practicing what we preach while washing dishes, teaching, writing, wrestling with our own stories, loving each other, our posse and the world fiercely. We’ll be studying Black Folx Religion, and how it resists white supremacy, then and now. We’ll be sending pics and thoughts from William Barber, Jim Forbes, Raphael Warnock, Traci Blackmon and less famous love warriors along the way. Taking you on this learning journey with us. Sending you Love. Period.
In the words of Kendrick Lamar: #WeGonBeAlright. Happy Monday! It’s a great day to build something NEW. You with me? While it’s painful to see the remnants of our beautiful and beloved sanctuary, we must lean into the opportunity to be even MORE committed to creating an inclusive space. One that expands beyond our physical walls just as WE have expanded beyond our physical walls with our digital church over this pandemic. We will always be Middle Collegiate Church-... we will ALWAYS strive to be a BOLD, NEW THING. And hard as it is saying bye to one way of being (in our sanctuary), means that we have OPPORTUNITY to say hello to something more than we ever even imagined. Won’t you dream with us? How can we serve you? Reach you? Do you feel plugged in? Excited to hear what you all think of the new Members Portal our digital minister Natalie Renee Perkins shared at the Congregational Meeting. Now, more than ever, I want to connect to YOU. Because you literally ARE Middle Church! See more
This is what it means to stand up for what’s right. Speak truth to power. Be willing to get uncomfortable. To go to jail. To be ostracized. So grateful Rev. Jackson is still in this movement. So grateful for leadership of my brother Bishop Barber. They’ll stand in the hot sun and get arrested so everyone has the right to vote. Others died for it. This is SO IMPORTANT. All Joe Manchin needs to do is change parliamentary procedure.... And he should be engulfed by neverending choruses condemning his cowardice until he does. I will be preaching liberation at Bishoo Barber’s church on July 4. So proud to fight alongside such committed voices like Barber and Jackson. How are you using your voice for love and justice? Talk to me! Tell me so I can celebrate you, love warrior!!
Beloved, I'm logging on real quick to bring you some joy and to remind you of some undeniable truths about your existence. Read on. You are loved. You ARE love.... You matter to the Creator of all things. You do not need to achieve perfection to be worthy of this love. I love you, and you matter to me. If you're not okay, that's okay. Every step you take towards bringing love and light to those around you is a holy step. God delights in you. Wait. Read that one again. God. Delights. In. You. Have a blessed evening. With love See more
Racist policy is at the core of systemic racism in America. We need more than a Black History Month. We need a black policy month.
I am still learning every day how to better love myself and this man. Some days my personal STUFF gets in the way, and I’m unable to love John in HIS language. . When we decide to love, we must first consider how the object of our love wants to have love shown to them. Sometimes that means bringing peace to conflict. Sometimes it means listening without immediately offering a solution. When you step into love, think not of how you want to love, but think of what kind of love is needed.
You are your best thing. Toni Morrison. Isn't it a beautiful thing to see the Black future in our children and our grandchildren? Wanna show me pics of your future?
