It may be cold outside, but in our barns the temps are as comfortable as the deep sand beds. Even though our barns may not look like they should be warm, all those cows ruminating away generates enough warmth so that no added heat is necessary even on the coldest days. Our side curtains raise and lower depending on the temperature and humidity and the rubber mats in the alleyways help to keep our cows feet warm and comfy. Add a little winter sun and you have yourself a great day to see what’s going on in the barn. With such a simple design, it’s pretty neat to see that with a few added comforts, our barns can tackle the coldest winters and the hottest summers. Happy, comfortable cows make our dairy thrive. Old man winter doesn’t mess with our herd!

Getting ready for #plant2021

Robbins Family Grain and North Harbor Dairy 05.11.2020

Yesterday we said goodbye to our sweet old lady, North Harbor Bonzana Patriot, or simply Patriot as she was known. She was an astonishing 19 years old. Patriot was born July 23rd, 2001. She started out on the dairy farm as an ordinary calf named 1035, then grew to be a heifer and became pregnant with her first calf. After she had her baby, she began milking. She grew up to have nine calves throughout her milking journey! Out of these nine calves, four of them turned out to b...e heifer calves whose names were 2053, 3145, 3860, and 4587. When Patriot was milking she produced over 400,000 pounds of milk in a lifetime. That is over 46,511 gallons of milk! Just before her retirement at the age of 13, Patriot was just shy of breaking the world record for the most milk produced by a cow in her lifetime. Once her milking career ended, Patriot retired to the luxiourious life at Old McDonald's Farm where she was loved, admired, and enjoyed by thousands of visitors. In the winters, she would go back across the road to spend the cold months in the dry cow barn with some of her girl-friends. She probably even spent some time with a daughter, granddaughter, and even great-great granddaughter while snow-birding at the dry cow barn. This fall, her bones and joints began to creak more and more as the weather got colder and more wet. We knew it was time for her to go to cow heaven. Patriot was a special cow and her maternal presence here on the farm will be missed. See more

From our family to yours, Happy National Farmers Day!

This week’s employee spotlight is on our most senior mechanic Jeff Wolf, Jeff has worked on everything on the farm from grain bins to skidsteers since 1992! His abundance of knowledge is a huge asset to the farm and to his coworkers. He’s a lover of Dr. Pepper and he’ll never say no to a home baked snack or pizza delivered to the shop. Always willing to pass his knowledge on to younger employees, his commitment to the farm is unwavering. In his spare time he enjoys renovating his farmstead, taking care of his beef herd, enjoying the outdoors and gardening.

Any cover crop is good for your soil, but some cover crops, like this Crimson Clover, are great for bees as well. On our farm we plant over 1,000 acres of cover crops to maintain soil health and biodiversity after fall harvest. Cover crops can include grasses, legumes, deep rooted vegetable types, and many more. Come visit the farm and enjoy a hayride and see how many cover crops you can find along the way.

To celebrate National Truck Driver week we would like to say a huge thank you to our loyal truck drivers, both part and full time. We would also like feature our very own James Whitmore! He travels more miles in a year than most do in 5 years! He hauls every sort of grain, hay or straw we produce here in the farm as well as salt, chocolate and other items! He is a great coworker, always showing up with a smile and a word of wisdom from his travels. Thanks for all that you do with us James!

No-till planting allows us to plant a crop without disturbing the soil, thus maintaining the health and vitality of our soil profile. Here we have no-till planted sunflower into spring oat stubble. Not only will it be beautiful, but our soils will also benefit from this practice.
