Edith Weinheim made her dream come true when she opened Designer’s Corner in 1978, selling clothing and accessories, and doing what she truly loved. More than four decades later, that dream has fully run its course as Edith retires, saying goodbye to a long-standing Riverdale business. Designer’s Corner located up until late last year at 3725 Riverdale Ave. was a staple of the neighborhood. Yet, when it was time to consider the shop’s future especially in the midst of t...he coronavirus pandemic Edith admits the decision to close her doors for good was one she didn’t make lightly. The time has come for me to learn who I am outside these four walls, and I could not be more excited for the road ahead, Edith said in a note posted on the empty storefront. I am filled with such joy, pride, happiness, fulfillment, and also tremendous sadness to be ending this chapter of my life.

In case you missed it: Police are investigating an early-morning fire Wednesday that claimed the life of a Spuyten Duyvil senior citizen. First responders were summoned to an apartment fire just after 2 a.m., on Jan. 13, in Apartment 2A of 3215 Arlington Ave. There they found Juan Melendez, 84, in his bed, where he was later pronounced dead.

One of those stops ahead of his swearing in was last month with Northwest Bronx Indivisible. It was with this progressive activist group formed in the wake of the Trump presidency where he emphasized pumping more federal dollars to help keep people in their homes in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. He also wants to focus a lot on public education something near and dear to his heart as a former Bronx public school administrator himself. Police are looking for a man they claim tried to steal some appliances from the Target store in Marble Hill before his encounter with law enforcement became physical. The man walked into Target just before 3 p.m., on Tuesday, according to officers with the New York Police Department's 52nd Precinct, and tried to walk off with a coffee maker and air fryer that he didn't pay for. By the time officers arrived, the man was already leaving the West 225th Street store. A simple trip to the bank might not seem like much a quick withdrawl from the ATM or cashing a check is a day-to-day-occurrence, and many customers do a lot of that without ever seeing a bank teller.

It’s been a long, hard year for businesses. But you don’t need to hear that from us. With seemingly never-ending closures, fewer customers, and a coronavirus pandemic-induced recession on top of that, keeping the lights on and employees paid has been a struggle for many.

Even before this unorthodox academic year began, it was still evident the landscape of education across the country fundamentally changed if not forever, then at least for the foreseeable future.

The city started work on paving over the Putnam Trail about a dozen years ago. Well, not quite. Designing started in 2008, but that work wouldn’t finish for another decade. Even with that finally done, the city had another obstacle to overcome: money. The paving project, from start to finish, carried a price tag of more than $4 million.

But in the late evening hours the night before, parents received much different news: The school will be closed until at least Nov. 5. Random coronavirus testing at the West 236th Street school revealed two students were positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, principal Steven Schwartz confirmed to parents on Thursday. The results were from 125 tests administered to both students and adults on campus, and were enough to initially shut P.S. 24 down for 24 hours.

BREAKING: Don't expect any traffic around P.S. 24 Spuyten Duyvil School on Thursday morning, because the campus is now closed. At least for the next 24 hours. Principal Steven Schwartz informed parents late Wednesday evening that "two or more members of our school community have tested positive for COVID-19 within seven days of each other," and that the 660 W. 236th St. campus "will close for an initial 24 hours." That will transition all students to fully remote learning during this period.
