People without disabilities or those who lack experience caring for someone with disabilities, struggle with understanding what independence means for people with special needs. Some days, independence means the ability to brush their own teeth or sit up unassisted on a couch without slouching over. Other days it means creating artwork, playing games and singing songs. The Riverhead BID invites you to spread some holiday cheer and support local business at the same time with the new "Downtown Dollars" digital gift card. It can be used at participating downtown shops and restaurants.

Sports, music and extracurricular clubs will return to Riverhead in the spring COVID permitting. The Riverhead Board of Education voted unanimously tonight to fund spring interscholastic sports, music and high school clubs. The board is using money budgeted but not spent on health insurance costs for the current year.

Regions that have 10% or less hospital capacity will be designated red zones, triggering school closings, business shutdowns and bans on all gatherings. Currently Long Island's hospital capacity numbers are the lowest among the state's 10 regions, with 18% available capacity. The state has ordered all hospitals in N.Y, to increase their number of beds by 25%.
