Chronic mouth breathing in children creates serious medical issues and affects facial and dental development. It also leads to poor sleep due to obstructed upper airways, and this sleep can adversely affect their growth and academic performance. A landmark study links mouth breathing, snoring and obstructive sleep apnea from as young as 6 months to significantly increased risk of the development of behavioral and social difficulties by the age of 7. Despite the verbal or gestural examples toddlers experience from their caregivers, toddlers have their own reasons for pointing. TYPICALLY DEVELOPING toddlers use more index-finger points at the BEGINNING of the second year of life. PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS (PA) and VOCABULARY SKILLS (VS) are the best predictors of language gains for school-age children, with Language Impairments, receiving Speech-Language Therapy in public schools. With good PA, your child can recognize the number of syllables in a word, recognize words with the same initial sounds, and recognize words that rhyme. With good CS, your child can learn what words mean when explained or by using context clues or word parts. If your child has a language impairment, ask your SLP how their therapy approach addresses your child’s PA and VS.
One of the most important early steps in speech development is to copy or imitate movements. This helps very young children become aware of how their attempts to communicate will impact the listener. And this helps them express themselves better in the long-run, especially for pre-verbal preschoolers with Autism. Ask your Speech Therapist for more info.
As many as 74% of residents in long-term care (LTC) are anticipated to have swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). Low food intake is commonly reported in persons with swallowing problems. Among seniors in LTC, reduced TONGUE STRENGTH is associated with longer meal times, reduced food consumption, and the presence of observable signs of swallowing difficulty. Child language ability at 4 years more accurately predicted LOW LANGUAGE at 7 years than a range of early child, family, and environmental factors.
