Recently we have noticed a large influx of motorized bicycles within the City. Almost all of these are utilizing a gas powered engine to propel the bicycle. These are not legal within NYS. Utilizing these bicycles can result in traffic citations as they are becoming a safety issue on the roadway. Below is a link to the NYS DMV website outlining what is legal to ride in NYS. The only motor allowed on a bicycle is an electric motor, less than 750 watts, that can either assist the rider to pedal up to 20 mph (class one bicycle with electric assist), or exclusively propel the bicycle up to 20 mph (class two bicycle with electric assist.) https://dmv.ny.gov//electric-scooters-and-bicycles-and-oth
