The Southern Tier can get especially cold during winter. This typically means turning up the thermostat and using more energy to heat our homes. Try out this tip of layering your wardrobe indoors instead of bumping up your thermostat. You can save energy and even save money as heating costs go up in winter. Reducing our energy usage means less greenhouse gases. We can all be part of the solution to climate change! #TipTuesday

Winter is the perfect time to prune any trees that need pruning! It is a lot easier to prune once the trees have dropped their leaves. A fresh wound from pruning can put the tree at risk of fungus or disease entering the tree. The cold weather keeps the threat of disease from fungus and insects at bay. There are several invasive species in NYS that attack trees such as the emerald ash borer and the hemlock woolly adelgid. We can do our part to keep our trees healthy. #TipTuesday #Sustainability #Invasives

The recent storms have compromised a drain pipe on Morgan Road coming into the park. The city is completing emergency repairs and has shut down a portion of Morgan Road for the repairs. The zoo is still open. Please follow the detour signs from Morgan Road to Spring Lane. Once you are on Spring Lane you can turn onto Earle Drive which will bring you to the park entrance. We appreciate your patience during these repairs and look forward to seeing you at the zoo!

#DYK that every 30 seconds a football field's worth of natural land disappears to development in the US and that less than 12% of US lands are protected from development. The main cause of wild life extinction is habitat destruction. Urban sprawl, logging, and industrial farming all contribute to habitat destruction. Want to learn more about what you can do to stop the destruction of wild places and help protect some our most threatened wild life? Join us for our next Conse...rvation Weekend Saturday July 10th and Sunday July 11th. Visit with some of our special guests including Cornell Cooperative Extension-Broome County, Broome County Environmental Management Council, The Naturalists' Club of Broome County, and Susquehanna Group of the Sierra Club. Plus learn more about red wolves, one of the most threatened species in the US, from our zookeepers, grab a "take and make" craft, and enter for your chance to win a new bike and other cool prizes!
