Why I drive fifty miles to visit the Russian Turkish Baths The science behind healing with hot and cold water is simple. Heat drives the blood to the surface ...of the body, opening the pores of the skin and pushing the toxins out. Cold water drives the blood back to the core of the body allowing the lymphatic system to flush. Alternating hot and cold six times cleanses the lymphatic system and detoxifies the blood, tissues and lungs. It rejuvenates the skin and makes you look younger. A weekly visit will jump start your immune system and prevent any and all diseases. All over south Florida there are hot tubs and saunas and occasionally you will find a steam room. Rarely are these all together and even more rarely are they coed. At the Russian Turkish Baths not only do you get the ocean water hot tub (no chlorine) you get two steam rooms because one is for aromatherapy (that you can bring) and an authentic Finnish Sauna. This is in a delightfully artistic alcove that includes hot and cold showers and a cold pool at 40 degrees. On the other side of the massage rooms there is another artfully delightful room called the Russian Radiant Room. It has Swedish needle showers and a cold pool that leads to a furnace room that Russians love to receive scrubs from a brush made of Oak leaves. There are two levels of benches lower and higher. Of course the more confident and experienced clients sit on the upper benches where the heat approaches 120 degrees. It took me years to work my way up to that level of heat. Located down the hall from the Radiant room is the high pressure water hose room, the Infrared room, the Polar bear room and the Relaxation room. There is also an authentic Russian deli that serves fruits and freshly squeezed juices. Opposite the aforementioned hot tub is a small but well designed weight room. Outdoors is an Olympic swimming pool and the beach. So you can visit the hot tub for fifteen minutes and then take a cold shower and relax. You can enter the Turkish Haman that contains it own cold shower and stay for thirty minutes and then relax. Then you can visit the Finnish sauna for fifteen minutes and finish with pouring cold water over your head and back. Or you can do the aromatherapy steam with your own bottles of eucalyptus and peppermint and breathe from you hands and cleanse your lungs. Then you can visit the Russian radiant room three times and alternate the heat with cold pool, Swedish needle showers and just cold water over your head and back. Or you can receive the oak leaf scrub from an attendant or buy your own and trade scrubs with a friend. Then you can relax and trade stories with people you just met. Then you can sit in the Infrared room for fifteen minutes and visit the polar bear room across the hall. You could finish this with a partner in the high-pressure water room alternating hot and cold water from a hose that looks just like a fire hose. Naturally you will be hungry after this, so a visit to the deli is required for fresh juices or salad. Then take a thirty-minute nap in the Relaxation room and wake up for a light workout. All in all, take a friend and spend four hours that is worth a weekend in the Bahamas. Dr. Love takes a small group of patients and friends this sunday to the Russian Turkish Baths. 5445 Collins Ave. IM for more details on price and car pooling See more

"One of the world’s earliest known public baths was built in the Indus Valley around 2500 BC in the lost city of Mohenjo-daro. Called the Great Bath, this large pool constructed of baked brick was excavated in the early 1900s by archaeologists in present-day Pakistan. Anthropologists say it may have been used as a temple, since bathing and cleanliness may have been linked to religious beliefs."
