On Saturday June 5, the Class of 2020 returned to campus to catch up and reconnect with RCDS friends, teachers, and coaches. They were also invited to sign their college pennants, a tradition that was put on hold by the pandemic last spring. It was wonderful to have the Class of 2020 back on campus and to celebrate with them in person!

AP Biology students participated in one of three end-of-year biotech labs in the Makerspace. Some created glowing bacteria by adding a jellyfish gene, some used a cell-free technique to observe the transcription and translation process, and others identified different mystery sharks using DNA fingerprinting and gel electrophoresis.

Throwback to when the entire Kindergarten class gathered on the lawn to present their Reader’s Theater plays. Leading up to their performances, students practiced reading aloud and created costumes for their characters. The students loved performing for their classmates!

MLK Day of Action! On Saturday, RCDS Students, families, and employees gathered virtually to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After hearing from Margarita Zimmerman from the immigrant resource center Building One Community, they listened to Upper School students read "Martin's Big Words" by Doreen Rappaport and created bookmarks with quotes or drawings inspired by Dr. King. The read aloud and the bookmarks served as a fitting kick-off for the All-Community Read...-a-Thon, the next component of Social Impact Week. During the seven-day read-a-thon, the RCDS community will read articles, chapters, and books, listen to podcasts, and watch videos that celebrate the spirit of Dr. King and examine social impact, activism, citizenship, and community. Sponsors will commit to donate certain amounts based on the number of units (books/chapters/articles/podcasts/videos), and the proceeds will be donated to Building One Community Read more about Social Impact Week here: https://www.ryecountryday.org//during-social-impact-week-r
