Passing on the Torch, Sermon from July 4, 2021 It is eleven years since Independence Day fell on a Sunday. Music from the Gents: Charles Perry Sprawls (Song 5 of 5). The Call, by Ralph Vaughan Williams, is a solo movement from his cantata Five Mystical Songs, a setting of George Herbert poems for chorus and baritone soloist. The work was premiered in 1911 at the Three Choirs Festival, with the composer conducting. While the premiere performance was with orchestra, Vaughan Williams offered several choices for accompaniment, including piano solo, string quintet, and wind ensemble. I...n this performance, we can enjoy the orchestral hues of the wonder Miller-Scott organ. https://youtu.be/Fh5g6-cJBiU

In limestone districts streams often sink and disappear, but at a distance of some miles re-emerge into light, with increased volume. -Sabine Baring-Gould, The Church Revival I won’t say that these written meditations cost nothing, but it is far less costly to work my thoughts into goodness than my heart. I can write several reflections sooner than I can reflect enough to effect a lasting change in those God-abiding chambers. Upon reflection, it is life itself, and the events...Continue reading
