Salmon River New York Fishing Reports

Yesterday as Tug hill took its relentless August pounding, one of the storms back built back towards Altmar, it sent down a strange spinning piece of condencing moisture, whether it was a funnel or just a scud cloud, it was fun watching it take different shapes as the storm pulled out of Altmar towards Tug hill.

My good buddy Chris with his 126th fish landed this winter, big egg sacs were key this morning.

Well looks like we are about to ingage in a normal spring weather pattern after a very normal winter weather pattern, something we haven't experienced in a few years.. Last week we had a 3 day warm snap melting a good chunk of snow in our region, but there's still a large snowpack over Tug hill that remains still too melt later in the spring. With below normal temps forecasted, this melt should be gradual with less spikes in the water up or down.. I would have too drive up to... the res. to make a real prediction, but if we hadn't had that 3 day warm up ....the River would have been heading down for a bit before going back up, now in may stay at a higher level like it is now til the Tug snowpack starts melting again, I would think 750 plus through late March, then a 1800 period or higher in Early April.... The water is very cold right now, but eventually..gradually each day it will begin warming from the strong March sun... Every year there is a week long window where the bites really good just priar too the Tug hill meltdown, then it slows til that is finished and the good bite resumes again as the waters drop and re warms in mid April. Most of last falls run has spawned or is spawning right now, most fish being hooked will be dropbacks after this week or shortly there after... and they like too feed after a long winter in the River. With relatively mild weather the last few weeks the creeks icy winter grip have loosened up and are now starting too be warmed by the March sun, this small window before the cold run off comes down off the headwaters can be a fun time too hit the tribs before they get blown out...... its by no means a bonanza yet, but the pick has begun for the season...
