THE WORLD'S FIRST AUTISM COMMUNITY We are delighted to announce Scalar Architecture has been engaged by Gersh Academy to transform the 122 acre Navy Intelligence Residential Campus of Sugar Grove, West Virginia past home to Edward Snowden into an integrated world’s first Autism Community. In transforming the Navy Intelligence Residential Campus into the integrated world’s first Autism Community, Scalar Architecture developed a key set of precepts within to be deployed... in phases as participation expands with further demographic demands: - ASD specificity. First and foremost, the design stems from current research on ASD. In particular, on the heterogenous picture of navigational processing in ASD. The studies show both specific strengths and also limitations in visuospatial and visuomotor behavior as compared to control groups e.g. One telling study points to sectors of the ASD population with increased challenges to navigate familiar rather than unknown domains, whilst another points to increased capacity for map reading and perceptual matching of distance information. (1) - Radical Reprogramming of the ground. At the campus scale, the project moves to reprogram the ground to incorporate a new range of spatial legibility, new strategies for environmental performance -- including ground water management, waste management and produce growth-- new patterns of socialization and recreation, and sub-cloistering of the campus into communities that linked into each other. - Overlay Co-option. One of the key challenges of the design was to co-opt all existing conditions including all infrastructure. The existing Navy Campus layout presented a vehicular centered campus that isolated its different elements. By an overlay of an intensive pedestrian network, The Autism Community presents now a set of linked, differentiated cloisters that facilitate a range of sociability, spatial navigation and connectivity differentiated by daily activities. This network will also co-form part of a new ground water management system. In all, Scalar Architecture has configured a campus in which the pedestrian networks, environmental performative systems and new programs conspire to produce a vibrant augmented perceptual realm that afford a tailored inhabitation and navigation of its ASD inhabitants.
