For the last few months, the Schenectady Police Department has partnered with Feed Albany to create a program we have called Feed the City. Every Thursday from 1-2 PM members of the Police Department have joined up with volunteers from the community to pass out meals to those in need. We have set up at various locations such as Mohawk Ambulance on State St, the Bridge St. Church parking lot, and most recently outside of the City Mission. The two volunteers pictured with Lieut...enant Mike Dalton are students at Schenectady Community College and have not missed an event yet. Syndey Swedick drives 45 minutes every day just to volunteer her time to help out the community. Dravid Seecharan not only serves his community through events like this, but also serves his country as a member of the Marine Corp Reserves. Each Thursday, these two, along with other volunteers, pass out over 100 meals to the residents of Schenectady. Thank you Sydney and Dravid for all of your help! See more

The Schenectady Police Department has been made aware of two thefts from vehicles that occurred during the overnight hours. In both incidents, the suspect used a heavy object to break a window in order to gain entry into the vehicle. The first incident occurred inside the Municipal Parking Garage, located at 220 Broadway, and the second occurred in a parking lot located on Franklin Street. Both scenes were processed and are currently under investigation. Often, our department... will respond to reports of cars rummaged through overnight, which are usually accessed when the owner forgets to lock their door or roll up their window. In this last night’s incidents though, the suspect or suspects, broke the windows to potentially retrieve something of value inside. We would like to remind residents and visitors to our city of the importance of not only locking your car door, but also removing any items of value which may be in eyesight. In the event that something must be stored in your vehicle, it is best to utilize the trunk. See more

Last year we were asked by CAP COM Federal Credit Union and Make-A-Wish Northeast New York to help create a wish for Connor, a young man from Glenville who wants to be a police officer. With the pandemic halting many of our community activities, we had to delay our plans for a bit. That was until last night, when we had a chance to meet Connor and his family in person at Jumpin’ Jacks! We had ice cream, laughed, and took tours of the police cars, along with our friends from the Village of Scotia Police Department. We also delivered a custom Schenectady Police uniform and a few other things Connor will need for his wish day, later this summer! We can’t wait to see you then Police Recruit Connor!

News Release 2020 Ieasha Merritt Homicide On the morning of July 5, 2020, just before 6:30am, Ieasha Merritt, a mom, was shot and left lying in a parking lot on the corner of Albany and Hamlin Streets. She was not the intended victim, rather she was caught in the line of fire as three masked gunmen emerged from a vehicle and began shooting across the parking lot, still occupied by more than 10 people at the time. The shooters fled, and so too did everyone in the lot, as five ...cars drove around Ieasha, leaving her alone and critically wounded. Minutes would pass before someone stopped and called for help. Ieasha died several days later in the hospital. Since the incident, investigators have worked tirelessly to identify the shooters and bring justice to Ieasha’s family. Witnesses have been interviewed, the shooter’s vehicle identified, and leads have been followed. As we are now approaching the one-year anniversary of Ieasha’s death, we are again asking for the public’s help. If anyone has information on this incident or was at the July 4th/5th party that occurred prior, please contact the Schenectady Police Department’s Tips Line at 518-788-6566.
