Fall is here and we’re savoring its many colors. Visitors are often surprised to learn that even the salt marshes on Fire Island flush red with the changing of ...the season. Here, Glasswort (Salicornia) turns bright pink and red as the days grow shorter, and the plant stops producing chlorophyll. Glasswort is an incredible little succulent that thrives in the salt marsh, named for its traditional use in the production of sodium carbonate, an important ingredient in glass production. There’s still time to catch this special spectacle. Visit Watch Hill or the Otis Pike Wilderness for the island's best salt-marsh views. Those aren't Cheetos, but instead Yellow Stagshorn, one of many types of fungus that can be found in the Sunken Forest. ...As decomposers, fungi play a critical role in the health of any forest -breaking down fallen trees, leaf litter and other plant materials into precious nutrients which can then recycle throughout the system. On your next visit keep an eye out for these little Cheetos. Yellow Stagshorn is common from mid to late summer. But don't be tempted to take a bite! Though not known to be poisonous, they're apparently quite tasteless and waxy.
