Friday, December 18 at 7 PM: Join us for on our Facebook page for the virtual premiere of The Harlem Chamber Players’ film In Song and Spirit. Conceived by harpist Dr. Ashley Jackson, this musical documentary weaves together excerpts from Harriet Jacobs's memoir, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, with stories of Jackson's family history and performances of African American spirituals. @TheHarlemChamberPlayers is also hosting a talk back afterwards. Visit their website ...to learn more. https://harlemchamberplayers.org///In_Song_and_Spirit.html Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is one of the books in Arturo Schomburg’s personal library, which he sold to NYPL in 1926. See a digital reproduction of Mr. Schomburg's copy using the Digitized Schomburg Books tool featured in the guide created by Allison Hughes, Matthew Murphy, and Bridgett Pride, librarians in the Manuscripts, Archives, and Rare Books Division. https://libguides.nypl.org/arturoschomburg #SchomburgCenter

In 1902, Colonel John McKee was worth $2 million and was likely the richest Black person in the U.S. Rebecca Bayeck, a postdoctoral fellow in Data Curation for African American and African Studies with the Council on Library and Information Resources, tells the story of this former Union officer and real estate tycoon. https://www.nypl.org/blog/2020/09/30/colonel-john-mckee #SchomburgCenter

Oscar Micheaux, the first African American filmmaker, paved the way for directors such as Kathleen Collins, Gordon Parks, Ava DuVernay, and Tyler Perry. Serena Torres, a librarian in our Manuscripts, Archives and Rare Books Division, writes a letter of thanks to the groundbreaking director and producer as she examines his papers, which are part of the Schomburg Center’s collections. One area of concern to NCNW was the lack of federal government jobs available to Black women, said Michael Mery, acting curator of the Photographs and Prints Division. When (Mary McLeod) Bethune, also a member of the White House public policy group known as the ‘Black Cabinet,’ wanted to conduct a White House conference on this issue she contacted First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in early 1938, and spoke with her on the significance of holding this gathering in a governmental setting to give prestige and history to it. https://www.nypl.org/blog/2020/10/20/black-women-politics... #SchomburgCenter #theellabakerinitiative #blackhistory
