The School of The New York Times 15.11.2020

"The School of The New York Times was one of the best experiences of my life and has been critical to my development as a journalist and artist. In the summer of 2019 I took Angel Franco's "Photojournalism as Art" course. Angel and the other instructors gave me an entirely new perspective on my work and encouraged me to branch out in what I was photographing. When I started the course I wasn't especially comfortable photographing in such a foreign place like New York City, bu...t with their guidance I was able to grow a lot. Since then my work has improved drastically as I have been able to be more comfortable as a photographer and more outgoing as a person. I like to think that every photograph I have taken since my time in New York has more depth and intention because of my experience at #SoNYT." -- Jivan West, SA19 : In April 2020, during lockdown JIvan started "Distanced", an eerie photographic essay of socially distanced images in a socially distant reality. "I wasn't intending on taking a gap year, but #SoNYT's program seemed like too good of an opportunity to pass. It offered real-life experience [..] working with professionals and networking with experts. I left the program with a brand new family, all of us international students became so close and we still talk so often to this day. I learnt and grew so much during my time in the program, not only with my writing skills but also just as a person. I am so grateful to have m...et and worked with the other students, teachers and staff. I can honestly say it was the best experience of my life, without a doubt." -- Tanya Mehta, Gap Year Student This spring we're offering #GapYearOnline! In honor of their Second Annual Personal Narrative Contest which began Oct. 13, #NYTimes Learning Network is featuring three winning narratives from last year’s challenge, annotated by the students who wrote them. "After analyzing Langston Hughes’s short story Salvation in my creative writing class, we were asked to write an essay describing how a contradiction in our own lives has influenced us. Immediately, I knew that I wanted to write about my experience at my first ...high school speech tournament." -- Maria Fernanda Benavides, a winner of the #NYTimes Learning Network 2019 Personal Narrative Contest Read about how Maria Fernanda Benavides hooks readers by dropping them into a scene. http://ow.ly/7OIO50BY6pA Fine-tune your personal narrative and discover what drives you with our Gap Year Online program. What is going on in this picture? What do you see that makes you say that? What more can you find?... "We started this feature with the simple idea of taking interesting photos from The Times and asking students to look closely and describe what they see. We partnered with the arts education organization Visual Thinking Strategies to provide live moderation on Mondays and to use their powerful three-question protocol [feaured above]" (via #NYTimes) Learn more about one of the most commented-on sections of the entire New York Times, the weekly "What is going on in this picture?" feature. http://ow.ly/ttJF50BIUM6 See more

"This summer, I got the chance to publish a story for Black and Magazine about an Instagram account drawing attention to local racism, and I was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to shed light on an important issue long overlooked in my own local community. I first started pitching freelance stories this year after attending The School of The New York Times last summer, and that experience taught me a lot about how to strengthen my reporting skills, form meaningful conn...ections in the journalism industry, and create stories that inspire people. I also love reading stories from my fellow SONYT alumni and hearing their amazing youth perspectives on important issues!"-- Lena McEachern, SA 2019 Read Lena's piece in Black and Magazine http://ow.ly/L70A50BHd9h @lenamceachern #AlumniAchievements #SoNYT #SummerAcademy #NYTimes #Writing #Journalism #SocialJustice See more

"For more than 20 years, Metronome, which includes a 62-foot-wide 15-digit electronic clock that faces Union Square in Manhattan, has been one of the city’s most prominent and baffling public art projects. Last Saturday at 3:20 p.m., messages including The Earth has a deadline began to appear on the display. Then numbers 7:103:15:40:07 showed up, representing the years, days, hours, minutes and seconds until that deadline."
