The younger the New York child, the more likely the child is to live in poverty. There is a relationship between poverty and poor health. Today is Child Tax Credit Awareness Day! Congress improved the CTC this year, expanding eligibility and giving more much-needed relief to families with children. Households representing more than 65 million kids will benefit, but improvements are scheduled to expire in 2022. President Biden has proposed extending the program as part of his American Families Plan, and we need our members of Congress to support efforts to make CTC improvements permanent. Tomrrow we celebrate Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. This holiday has been celebrated for over two centuries by Black Americans, dating back to June 19, 1865, when troops arrived to free the enslaved people in Texas. The holiday received its name by combining June and 19th. The day is also sometimes called Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. Juneteenth is now an official... New York State and federal holiday. This year, we honor families and advocates doing the work to build systems and implement policies to end racial inequities that result in Black children being disproportionately represented in foster care and experiencing poverty at persistently higher rates than white children.
