Aron Belka’s piece Contract Tracing is from a series of portraits painted of Sierra Leoneans who were on the front lines of the Ebola outbreak. Before contact tracing was part of the common vernacular, Belka painted the portrait of an older gentleman who was part of a round of contact tracing to help contain the spread of Ebola. Artist Buket Savci’s recent paintings portray multiple figures entangled with each other surrounded by inflatables and toys, painted in vivid colors. Away from any kind of negativity, the figures are left free to enjoy the scene, but at any moment, the inflatables, like life, might pop and ruin the illusion and snap them back to reality.
