Counting down the days til our award application deadline on November 10th Let's take a look at the Spring 2017 award winner and our current Board Chairwoman, Josephine Geraci of My Mom Knows Best. What made me apply for the award?... I remember calling the Chairwoman of SCWBEC at the time, Lorraine Kimmey, with a question. She asked me if I was at a computer so she could direct me to a website. I told her yes I was sitting at my desktop, but then there was silence. A long, long pause. I profusely apologized for the long wait, I told her my computer was still thinking slowly. A few days later, at our monthly SCWBEC meeting they announced the Linda Jasper & Sally Ann Slacke Award. Wow - $2,000!!! I dreamed about what I would do if I was given that kind of money for my business. It didn't take me long to realize it was probably time to upgrade to a new desktop. So I sat down and quickly filled out the application---I thought to myself, someone has to win--it might as well be me. When the call came from the Treasurer who told me I won, I became speechless. I couldn't believe it! Peg kept saying, "Are you still there?" I wiped my tears and said, "yes". As a woman entrepreneur, sometimes the path to success can be a lonely one. When I got that call, I remember having such a warm feeling in my heart. Wow, an organization that cares about me, my business and my journey. I went on to buy a new Apple Desktop that has truly helped my business grow because I'm able to work so much more efficiently. I'm so proud to be a part of such a great organization. It's like we are one big family out to help each other grow our businesses. To learn more about Josephine's amazing products, check out www.glovies.com The deadline to apply for our $2,000 award is TOMORROW and someone has to win it! It might as well be YOU! Head on over to scwbec.org to fill out the application and make sure it's postmarked by November 10th. We can't wait to celebrate our next winner! What will you do with the money?

Counting down the days til our award application deadline on November 10th Let's take a look at our 2018 award winner, Kimberly Phyfe of Phyfe Photography Tell us a little about you and your business?... Phyfe Photography began completely out of necessity after I was laid off from a job I loved. My son was 10 months old at the time and only two weeks after losing a job I loved, he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. I realized my new role was going to be as a stay at home mom to a special needs toddler. But there was still something tugging at my heart - a deeper desire to find meaningful & rewarding work, to make connections with other women (especially moms), and to serve a community in need. My son was further diagnosed with Autism and has transitioned from in home therapies to a center based program. I have made it my mission to offer free or discounted photography sessions to families with special needs children just like James. It’s been an exceptional blessing to take my skill set and put it to good use. I love photographing professional head shots for female entrepreneurs, couple’s sessions for engagements and anniversaries, maternity and newborn and first birthday portraits for babies, and celebrating milestones with little ones who are learning to sit up or crawl or walk. But my favorite is capturing a smile or the sweet spirit of a child who otherwise might not have images like everyone else and giving that family a gift to treasure forever. That’s why my tagline is Phyfe Photography: Memories for Life! What made you apply for this award? I applied for the SCWBEC Award so that I could upgrade my camera equipment, continue to host my website, invest in furthering my education, purchase the best editing software, and subsidize sessions for special needs families. How has this award grown your business? That $2,000 was such an incredible boost to my first year in business. I was able to purchase camera equipment I would never have been able to buy for myself at such an early stage. It really expanded my ability to shoot all year long. Outdoor photography is truly weather dependent. Upgrading everything means that I can continue to book clients and earn money even during the slow season. I have blown last year’s goals out of the water and continue to surprise myself by learning new skills and implementing them. I’ve also been doing head shots for several amazing business women in SCWBEC! Helping them grow their brand, have professional pictures to use on their websites and social media, and feel confident in their images has been a tremendous gift!
