"Vitiligo is an acquired loss of pigment with full depigmentation of patches," explains board-certified dermatologist Michele Farber of Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City. The disorder causes the skin to lose its natural color, which results in patches of lighter skin that can appear anywhere on the head or body (though they are most common on sun-exposed areas such as the face, upper chest, backs of the hands, arms, and feet). Before you head out in the this weekend, apply SPF to those easily forgotten spots: Ears, lips and backs of hands. Ears Skin cancers can occur on any part of the ear. Make sure to slather on the sunscreen to all parts of your ears.... Lips Use a lip balm with SPF 30. The lower lip is about 12 times more likely to be affected than the top lip. Backs of hands After you're done applying SPF to your body, make sure to rub it into backs of hands, too. Your hands are one of the first places to show photoaging. Eyelids Protect your eyelids by wearing sunglasses. Or use an eye cream that contains (SPF), a sunscreen stick with physical blockers, like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide

Skin Myth: Darker skin tones don't need SPF. Having a darker skin tone does not fully protect you from the sun. Melanin provides an SPF anywhere from 1.5-4, so while skin of color can take longer to burn, it will still sunburn without any sun protection. SPF also only refers to UVB protection but UVA also damages skin. Make sure the sunscreen you use is broad spectrum and covers both UVA and UVB.

One of the most common myths about sun protection is that if you have a darker skin tone, you're naturally protected from the sun. Not so, says Dr. Jennifer David. Dr. David says: "While people of color have a natural advantage of having more melanin in their skin to protect them from the sun’s UVR, they can still develop skin cancers. Unfortunately, studies show that when people of color do get skin cancer they are often diagnosed later and have a higher mortality rate than... white patients with the same diagnosis." So what you can you to protect yourself? Wear an SPF of at least 30 every day! Dr. David says: "While mineral based sunblock containing titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are recommended for their effectiveness in physically blocking the absorption of ultra violet rays, they don’t always blend well into the darker skin. Using simple tricks such as aggressively massaging the sunscreen into your hands first to have it absorb better into the skin are sometimes helpful. Chemical sunscreens that contain avobenzone, hemosalate or octisalate absorb into the skin and protect the skin by changing UVR into heat. These sunscreens tend to blend into darker skin better without leaving a grey/white hue."

Are you using a witch hazel toner as part of your skincare routine? If so, there are a few things you should know. Dr. Rachel Nazarian says: Find a witch hazel toner that is buffered with other hydrating ingredients, like aloe vera, rose water, hyaluronic acid, or antioxidantsas well as skipping the alcohol base. This makes it more tolerable for the skin and won't completely strip your barrier of good oils. How to use it: Post-wash, gently sweep it over the skin using a cot...ton or reusable pad, and follow with your serums and creams. As you step out this weekend, please remember to wear a mask. Both the CDC and the Mayo Clinic agree that wearing a mask helps slow the spread of COVID-19. While masks save lives, they may not be so kind on your skin. @huffpost spoke to several dermatologists, including Dr. Nava Greenfield about how to save your skin while still saving lives. Because face masks foster a micro-environment of increased humidity, friction and heat, they can cause irritation, especially in peopl...e with underlying skin conditions. Dr. Greenfield recommends washing your face anti-acne washes work particularly well before putting on your mask and immediately after you take it off. https://www.schweigerderm.com//how-to-avoid-skin-irritati/

How can teledermatology help during the COVID-19 pandemic? Dr. Jason Miller says: During these trying times, safe and efficient access to medical care is essential. With the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the advances in telemedicine have been very fast and extremely successful. Teledermatology allows patients to easily connect with their dermatologist from the safety and comfort of their home. Using this technology, providers can diagnose rashes, make recommendations f...or skin care, refill medications, and even assess possible skin cancers. Even with social distancing protocols, expert skin evaluation is still available - now only a few clicks away!

In case you thought it was safe to forgo the SPF and only seek shade, read this. A study published in JAMA Dermatology looked at how well a beach umbrella protected against sunburn and how it compared with protection provided by sunscreen with a high SPF. The study found that, during 3 hours of sun exposure, there was a total of 142 sunburn incidences in the umbrella group vs 17 in the sunscreen group. Neither shade nor sunscreen alone completely prevented sunburn.... Meaning: A beach umbrella alone may not provide sufficient protection for extended UV exposure. Combining multiple sun protection measures is needed to achieve optimal protection. The only way to fully protect your skin from UV damage when outdoors is to wear broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 & reapply every 2 hours; wear sun-protective clothing AND seek shade. #sunprotection #skincancertips #safesuntips #newyorkdermatologist #schweigerderm #Sunscreen #skinhealth #sunprotectiontips

While in between Botox & filler appointments, Dr. Michele Farber suggests turning to effective skincare products, such as patches with silicone or hydrating ingredients like peptides, which induce collagen production and hyaluronic acid to help plump fine lines and also help stop some degree of muscle movement while they’re on the skin. She says: "These ingredients can help repair the skin barrier and can be a great way of keeping a skin routine going while at home for... a prolonged period."
