U.S. Coast Guard New York 30.10.2020

While our circumstances have changed due to COVID, we remain committed to sustaining our critical partnerships. Today Sector New York leadership met with members of the North Hudson Area Maritime Security Committee to discuss shared safety and security challenges on the Hudson River. Thanks to the multiple state and county law enforcement leaders that participated, and a special thanks to Ulster County Sheriff Juan Figueroa for hosting!

#SectorNewYorkUSCG #USCGNewYork #CoastGuardNewYork #PictureOfTheday: The Real World King's Point! We might be a little famous right now for our Buoys's and Tattoos - and rightfully so! - but we also take our Ice Breaking, Search & Rescue, Vessel Traffic, Hard Charging Civilians, Service Academy LaCrosse Rivalries (with sincerest apologies in advance to the Coast Guard Academy - read the story and you'll understand) and EVEN our Sushi Budgets pretty seriously here at the hard...est working Sector in the ENTIRE United States Coast Guard! Take a moment to follow the link below to find out about the adventures at Execution Rock's and beyond by the irreverent but focused crew that man our little station that can: King's Point! This story, and much, much, more, is in our new quarterly magazine - Guarding Liberty. In case you missed our launch, the magazine is hosted online and highlights the events, activities, and people that make Sector New York a unique place to serve. The magazine is in 'flip book' form and is accessed online through your desktop computer or tablet just like an actual book with turning pages. To enjoy the publication on your phones it is best viewed in 'flip book' form by turning the device horizontal/side ways. Due to access restrictions of Department of Defense websites the magazine may not be accessible at a USCG Work Station, but, again, it is able to be accessed from personal computers and personal media devices. The first issue includes features on recently transferred Boatswain Mate Senior Chief Holly Campbell, Coast Guard Station King's Point New York, our Sector New York Spouses Association, The Vessel Traffic Service, and CarrieAnn Dixon, a vessel traffic supervisor who serves as a first responder in New York City in her off time. This edition also introduces our new Command Cadre members, CAPT Zeita Merchant and Command Master Chief Robert Riemer, and offers a photo essay of our 9/11 Remembrance ceremony on the 19th anniversary of the tragic day. Please take a moment...or a few moments...and check out The Guarding Liberty! Captain Jason Tama had the distinct honor of presiding over the Change of Watch from former Sector New York Reserve Command Master Chief (Silver Badge) Justin Knudsen to new Sector New York Reserve Command Master Chief Allen Garneau. Knudsen, who served in his capacity at Sector New York for the past three years, completed an exemplary tour that saw him lead reservists in support of the sector mission ; during his tour, in 2018 and 2019, the Sector was selected for the Rear ...Admiral Bud Sparks Award - recognizing large station and small station excellence for Sector and Station New York. Master Chief Knudsen was recently selected as the Gold Badge Reserve Command Master Chief for the US Coast Guard First District. Master Chief Garneau reports to Sector New York from a similar position as Reserve Command Master Chief for the National Capitol Region in Maryland.

While it didn't appear so to his granddaughter Natalie Claire, who never stopped smiling, Sector New York was filled with 40+ Years of melancholy moments as long time civilian Command Security Officer, Mike Di Trani, retired after standing the watch for decades over his beloved Coast Guard, city and community. Mike's retirement marked the last of three legs of service as a reserve and active duty Coast Guard Senior Chief, an NYPD Lieutenant and, in his third act, the safekee...per of our Coast Guard family. Mike's wisdom, professionalism and friendship will never be able to be replaced. Thank you, Mike, for service well rendered and a job well done. #USCGNewYork #SemperParatus #FAIRWINDSANDFOLLOWINGSEAS #WeHaveTheWatch

#SECTORNewYork #coastguardnewyork #pictureoftheday: WELCOME TO THE BUOY YARD!!! Now that we have your attention with the tattoos - admittedly they are impressive and we'll be happy to pass along to Senior Chief Boatswain Mate Joey Bucciero your well placed admiration - we'd like to talk about the real story: Aids to Navigation Team (ANT) New York's grimy and important mission to keep the New York waterways safe for maritime commerce. Beauty is all about perspective - and perh...aps 17-foot tall, 10-ton buoys covered in barnacles, salt water erosion and all manner of ilk that you don't notice when you're watching those big commercial ships travel through the harbors in the port of New York and New Jersey and all up and down the Hudson River don't necessarily twinkle in your eyes , but the maritime commerce world smiles whenever they pop up because they are guiding their way to get you the goods and services you use every day! ANT New York is one of the largest aids to navigation teams in the Coast Guard with 21 active duty personnel and two 49-foot Buoy Utility Stern Loading (BUSL) boats and two 26-foot Trailerable Aids to Navigation Boats (TANB). The ANT works in the largest Maritime Transportation System (MTS) on the Eastern Seaboard which yields nearly $6.6 billion of commerce per day ($2.4 trillion annually) maintaining nearly 1000 primary and secondary navigational aids throughout their nearly 1,600 square mile area of operations. In addition to the ANT, Bayonne, NJ is home port to the largest black hull fleet with Coast Guard Cutters KATHERINE WALKER, PENOBSCOT BAY, STURGEON BAY, HAWSER, and LINE conducting search and rescue (SAR), Aids to Navigation (ATON), Port and Waterways Coastal Security (PWCS), Law Enforcement (LE), and Domestic Ice breaking as their primary missions. Want to learn more about the happenings at the BEST Coast Guard Sector in the World? Now, back to our regularly scheduled tattoo programming with Officer In Charge (OIC)Senior Chief Bucierro, Chief Petty Officer Michelle Roberts, and Petty Officer First Class Dylan Kester. #CoastGuard #USCGSecNewYork #SemperParatus #StrongerTogether #WeHaveTheWatch #coastguardenlistedassociation #USCG #GoCoastGuard #1790 #RevenueMarine #NewYorkMinute #BayonneNJ #SectorNewYork #CoastGuardCommandant #mcpog Dan Henry, USCG New York Public Affairs

At Sector New York, we have an OWN IT culture: Own the mission; Work together; No toxic behavior; Invest in our future; and Take care of one another. Part of Investing in our future, is investing in our community, and today we did just that. Under the leadership of our #CoastGuardEnlistedAssociation, members of Sector New York came together on a rainy Friday for a beach clean-up at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island. Thanks to all those that participated, and Bravo Zulu to our junior enlisted leaders spearheading this monthly effort to help improve our community! #CGEA #OWNIT #USCG #SemperParatus #StrongerTogether #CoastGuardNewYork

Our focus on Diversity and Inclusion is one of the key tenets that makes the Coast Guard Team #StrongerTogether !! We asked a few of the key members of the USCG Sector New York Team to share their unique perspective on their culture and how it both informs them and helps define who they are as well as add to the rich tapestry of our service. #HispanicHeritageMonth #USCG #StrongerTogether #SemperParatus #UnitedStatesCoastGuard #CoastGuardNewYork

On Friday, October 2nd, CAPT Jason Tama and Sector New York had the enviable honor of swearing in the new Coast Guard Auxiliary National Commodore Alex Malewski, and National Vice Commodore Gus Formato. The two auxiliary leaders, who have both spent significant time in the New York region as part of their service to the Auxiliary, would normally receive the honor at the national auxiliary training center, but chose to share the special moment at Sector New York. The auxili...ary, and those who serve there-in, are an invaluable team member and resource to the active and reserve Coast Guard as their responsibilities include promoting and teaching boating safety - one of the Coast Guard's most fundamental and invaluable duties. Even in the COVID-19 environment, Coast Guard auxiliarists continue their role promoting boating safety initiatives nationwide. Commodores Malewski and Formato will continue supporting the Coast Guard daily in two of the highest ranking positions in the auxiliary. #coastguard #CoastGuardAuxiliary #SectorNewYork #USCGNewYork #StrongerTogether #SemperParatus #WeHaveTheWatch

The Coast Guard is known for the motto Semper Paratus, "Always Ready" - but there's another motto that applies all too often..."Adapt and Overcome." Adapt and Overcome is just what the Coast Guard Cutter WIRE did after a spring and summer of unexpected change in the world. The cutter changed her plans to head up to Lake Champlain after a long period at the dock and decided to visit our sister sector in the Long Island Sound. The trip gave Petty Officer Third Class Kyle Hooten... the chance to handle all coordination for the trip as WIRE left from homeport in Saugerties with a little fog on the Esopus creek and headed for Long Island Sound and steamed straight to Governors Island for an overnight mooring where she was home-ported" from 1963 - 1996. On the way down Petty Officer Second Class Curtis Gustin was presented with his third Good Conduct Medal with the Freedom Tower as a backdrop! The next day the crew headed for Port Jefferson Harbor to conduct some recreational boating safety operations but ran into rough weather along the way; on Wednesday WIRE conducted towing operations with Station Eatons Neck and, a few hours later, Helicopter Operations with Airstation Cape Cod. On Wednesday night WIRE tied up at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut before transiting to Huntington Bay for anchorage and boarding. Like all good things, the trip came to an end and WIRE transited home on Friday, October 2 - rolling up the Harlem River to complete what was, for much of the crew, their first circumnavigation of Manhattan and made it home on Saturday transiting the Hudson and catching the beginnings of the beautiful fall colors before they tied up back at home in Saugerties. There are certainly worse jobs to have or missions to perform in the Coast Guard than patrol these beautiful waters up and down the Hudson River - but the crew of the WIRE isn’t complaining at all!
