YOU MAY BE ENTILED TO CLAIM LOST MONEY Yes, it’s true: Lost or unclaimed money gets turned over by organizations required to report dormant accounts to the New York State Office of the State Comptroller (OSC). This money includes things like forgotten savings accounts, lost paychecks, and stocks or bonds. Currently, the OSC is in possession of approximately $14 billion in unpaid funs. Between April 2014 through March 2015, a record $427 million has been paid to claimants. T...here is no fee to reclaim funds, and OSC offers an easy to use online search tool which can be accessed on this site: https://ouf.osc.state.ny.us/ouf The OSC encourages everyone to contact the Office of Unclaimed Funds directly to determine if they are holding funds that rightfully belong to them. Although there is no fee to reclaim funds, a claimant may choose, or may be required depending upon the circumstances of the owner of the unclaimed funds, to utilize the services of an Abandoned Property Location Service Provider (APLSP). An APLSP must have direct contact with the account owner, or the account owner’s duly appointed representative, such as, for example, the executor/administrator of a deceased account owner’s estate, the account owner’s heirs; or an attorney acting on the behalf of the account owner. In order for an APLS, including an attorney, to act on the client’s behalf, they must have a letter of Authorization and Fee Agreement signed by rightful owner (or authorized estate representative), witnessed and acknowledged before a notary public. The agreement must also disclose that abandoned funds can be obtained directly from the OSC without paying a fee. Moreover, the maximum fee allowable is 15% of the funds recovered. Disclaimer: The foregoing is for educational purposes only. Sgouras Law Firm PLLC is not affiliated with OSC and does not directly or impliedly adopt or endorse any statements or representations made by the same. The foregoing is not intended to be legal advice, and no attorney client relationship is created by the dissemination of this information or use of this site.
