Healthcare Design Magazine has featured the Bayalpata Hospital and its impact on remote, western Nepal. Thanks to Tracey Walker for the insightful article, and for recognizing the full project team, including our local partner Ethicons-EWES J/V and our contractor Subedi-Associate J/V, without whom the hospital wouldn’t have been possible! https://www.healthcaredesignmagazine.com//remote-impact-b/ Subeen joshi, Puskar Bhandari, Bzee Raven, Arun Rimal, Jeff Wandersman, XS.Sp...ace, SunFarmer Transsolar Possible Nyaya Health Nepal #bayalpatahospital #ruralhealthcare #bayalpata #achhamnepal #possiblehealth #nyayahealth #healthcare #healthcarearchitecture #ruralhealth #globalhealth #architectswithoutborders #rammedearth #rammedearthconstruction #rammedeartharchitecture #earthconstruction #ruralarchitecture #sustainablearchitecture #hospitaldesign #architecturecanheal #health #dignity #architectureheals #solarenergy #naturalventilation #designforimpact #publicarchitecture

A rammed earth dormitory provides accommodation to visiting doctors at the Bayalpata Hospital. Nestled into the hillside beyond stone retaining walls, this building is one of the more private spaces on the campus. The building contains eight single bedrooms, two communal bathrooms and a communal kitchen, plus break-out spaces along the corridor for informal gatherings and individual work. Each bedroom looks out onto the Seti River Valley and the Himalayan peaks beyond. The th...ermal mass of the rammed earth means even without air conditioning the interior remains temperate throughout the year. Hot water is generated by solar water heaters. This structure, the first we built at Bayalpata at the outset of a nearly five year construction process, hosted us on our many subsequent site visits. At Bayalpata Hospital in the Himalayan foothills, we used topography to naturally differentiate the various programs, with the administrative building (8) at the highest point, overlooking the rest of the campus, and the staff housing (12) in a more secluded area downhill. In this section drawing we also see the Inpatient and Surgery buildings (10 & 11) and their arrangement around a private courtyard, a quiet space removed from the more public functions to the south. #archit...ecturalsection #bayalpatahospital #ruralhealthcare #bayalpata #achhamnepal #possiblehealth #nyayahealth #healthcare #healthcarearchitecture #ruralhealth #globalhealth #architectswithoutborders #rammedearth #rammedearthconstruction #rammedeartharchitecture #earthconstruction #ruralarchitecture #sustainablearchitecture #hospitaldesign #architecturecanheal #health #dignity #architectureheals #solarenergy #naturalventilation #designforimpact #publicarchitecture #topography #architecturalrepresentation #drawingoftheday See more

We’re proud to be a finalist for the International Design Awards Covid-19 Design Innovation grant! https://idesignawards.com/graphicDesignGrant.html . We proposed a new universal labeling system and certification program, CONTACT, to better inform the public of healthy materials. As the COVID-19 pandemic has made clear, everyday surfaces can be vehicles for the transmission of a wide range of human pathogens. Product labeling, legally mandated since the 1960s, combats disinfo...rmation and promotes consumer safety. Government-sponsored labels like Energy Star are ubiquitous and easily provide information on energy-efficient products. The Declare label, by the Living Future Institute, identifies and certifies a product’s carbon, water, energy, and waste impact. Yet current labeling programs do not address how materials respond to bacterial, viral, and fungal microbes harmful to our health. . What is safe to touch? How long does a virus survive on a surface? Such questions are frequent during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the general label (Contact Sheet), CONTACT would produce a number of other resources to better inform and remind the public of a material’s potential to spread human pathogens. One resource, a Material Table, would identify the Epidemic Rating of a material, highlighting how long a pathogen survives on a surface, and comparing this information to other common materials. . The recycling symbol, now internationally recognized, was designed to raise environmental awareness for the first Earth Day in 1970. On the occasion of the 2019-2020 coronavirus pandemic, is a new symbol needed to address materials and public health? An open hand would act as CONTACT’s icon, succinctly declaring the transmission risks associated with a specific material. A natural progression of the CONTACT program would be the inclusion of the open hand symbol on packaging supplies of all kinds, from shipping boxes, to cosmetic containers, and even shopping bags. #epidemiology #publichealth #idaawards2020 #coronavirus #productlabeling #idadesignawards #publicdesign #designgrant #publicsafety #consumersafety #safesurfaces #packagingdesign #healthandsafety #designforgood

Our Bayalpata Hospital project in rural Nepal has been featured by Dezeen. Thanks to India Block for the story. https://www.dezeen.com//bayalpata-hospital-sharon-davis-d/ During the course of five years in construction, our project team overcame a number of hurdles, including earthquakes, border disputes, and a change in government. Our founder and principal, Sharon Davis, is honored to join the distinguished panel of judges for Isolation Transformed, a competition for designers thinking about post-virus environments. The Covid-19 crisis has focused attention on the living and collective spaces we inhabit and use in our everyday life. Given the necessary isolation for individuals, families, communities and cities, how can we use design to alleviate or improve the physical and psychological contexts in ...which we live, work, and play? The competition is organized by the World Architecture Festival and PechaKucha. Other judges include Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, Nigel Coates of Nigel Coates Studio, Ralph Johnson of Perkins+Will, Dame Laura Lee of Maggie's Centres, Sunand Prasad, and Peter Exley of ArchitectureIsFun The competition is free to enter and open to all architects, designers, and engineers, with a deadline of August 31st. https://www.worldarchitecturefestival.com/isolation-transfo #isolationtransformed #covid19 #covid_19 #architecturecompetition #worldarchitecturefestival #pechakucha #normanfoster #nigelcoates #sharondavisdesign #perkinswill #socialdistancing #waf #pkcreate

For Bayalpata Hospital we designed several spaces exclusively for womenincluding a Maternity Ward and an Antenatal Care buildingwhich privilege natural light, passive ventilation, and privacy. Bayalpata’s emphasis on maternal health is rare among Nepal’s rural health facilities, a response to the country’s high maternal mortality rate, one of the worst in Asia. (As of 2015, an estimated 258 women die for every 100,000 live births, compared to the USA’s rate of 14 per 100k...... or Finland’s 3). Death from complications during pregnancy and childbirth is largely preventable and is an indirect consequence of poverty, distance to hospitals, and poor quality healthcare services. Bayalpata offers free maternal healthcare and participates in Nepal’s Safe Motherhood program, reimbursing expecting mothers for travel to and from the hospital. Today we share a few scenes from the staff housing at Bayalpata Hospital. Due to its remote location, critical medical and maintenance staff live on site with their families, meaning the campus is more than just a hospital but also a home. Clustered together apart from the medical facilities, here daily life plays out in a more private, village-like setting. The houses are built of rammed earth and passively heated and cooled, with water heated by individual solar hot water h...eaters.
