The winter solstice happens today. Today’s the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere, thanks to the tilt of the earth. We often think of the winter solstice as an event that spans an entire calendar day, but the solstice actually lasts only a moment. Specifically, it’s the exact moment when a hemisphere is tilted as far away from the Sun as it can be, making the sun’s path across the sky as low in the sky as... it can be. How can we observe the effects of solstice ourselves? On the day of the solstice, stand outside at noon and look at your shadow. It’s the longest shadow that you’ll cast all year! Do this again on the day of the summer solstice and you’ll see almost no shadow. Today marks the beginning of winter. On a positive note, reaching the winter solstice also means the return of more sunlight each day. It will only get brighter from here on!

Get ready for tomorrow, which is National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day. Most of us neglect the condition of our computers. Once a year, people celebrate National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day by doing just that by cleaning up the files on their desktops. This day was first celebrated around the world in 2010 to motivate people to neatly organize their digital files. A cluttered and unorganized desktop can slow down your computer and make finding files more difficult. Use... this day as an opportunity to clean and organize so that you can work more easily on your computer. Go through your files on your desktop and determine which ones are no longer necessary, and send them to the trash or recycling bin. Then sort the others into folders. It’s so much better to have things stored in organized folders than scattered across your desktop! Transfer the photos on your desktop to portable storage devices, or just save them in special folders on your hard drive. Also make sure your back-up system is working correctly. However you go about it, cleaning out your desktop will make it easier to find your files, and in turn, you will be more productive.

Today is Global Handwashing Day. Now more than ever, washing hands is vital to our health and safety, especially while fighting the Covid-19 global pandemic. Improved hand hygiene is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. The CDC recommends that you follow these five steps every time. 1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. 2. Lather your hands by rubbing them toget...her with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. 3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the Happy Birthday song from beginning to end twice. 4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. 5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Remember to lather up and stay safe!

Daniel keeps the firm running smoothly by managing, scheduling, organizing, and handling the firm’s calendar. Our success is due to all of the team members at Sholes & Miller working together. Today is National Child Health Day, which focuses on raising people’s awareness about how they can protect and develop children’s health. Each child deserves to be the healthiest he or she can be. From the food they eat to the words they hear, children require support and opportunities to grow. Parents often worry about chronic disease, accidents or childhood illnesses. At the same time, they focus on a child’s mental health and general health. Whether it’s their environment,... the food they eat or how much TV they watch, this day is an excellent opportunity to support the children in your life. According to the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, about one in six children between 2 and 19 in the United States is overweight, which is a risk factor for serious health consequences including asthma, diabetes and heart disease. This is especially relevant right now since children with underlying medical conditions may be at risk for more severe illness from COVID-19. Child Health Day helps spark or increase people’s awareness of ways to minimize or alleviate health problems that children may face. Observe Child Health Day with a child by going for a walk, playing outdoors, doing some yard work or other physical activities together. Or you may want to help to clean up the environment. Whether it’s a local park, lake or walking path, making your community cleaner benefits everyone in it, especially children. Supporting a children’s charity is also a great way to promote children’s health and well being. #ChildHealthDay

Today is International Coffee Day! Enjoy a cup of joe while reading these fun coffee facts: Coffee beans are called "beans" because of the resemblance, but they’re actually berries that grow on a bush. Coffee drinkers tend to live longer, plus they have a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.... Coffee is the world’s second largest traded commodity right after crude oil, and the most consumed beverage, after water. For the 1932 Olympics, Brazil couldn't afford to send their athletes to Los Angeles, so the government loaded them in a ship full of coffee sold to finance the trip. Enjoy your cup of java today on International Coffee Day, and everyday!
